Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Enyart.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jack. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in L.A. and though I’ve traveled extensively, I suppose I’m still a Hollywood kid at heart. My father ran an ad agency in the Mad Men era: that provided my entrée into cartooning, and a long career in animation and comic books, mostly scriptwriting for Looney Tunes, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Duck Tales, Pink Panther… too many to remember without looking at my resume!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a professional artist of any kind means establishing a reputation, getting known for a certain thing… but not letting that “thing” limit your growth. At a certain point, people started asking me for advice about cartooning, and I found I enjoyed giving it. So I started a “consultoonting” business which led to lectures, seminars, and teaching. Currently, through Vancouver Animation School, I teach Writing for Animation online to students across the world!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Enyartist – what should we know?
As animation (like everything else) was transformed by computerization, I found I had lost touch with the “tactility” that attracted me to art in the first place. My wife, a sewing teacher, urged me to start drawing again; so I developed a style in watercolor and pastel that allows me to make swift, reasonably priced portraits and other “drawings for special occasions.”
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
While still keeping a hand in cartooning and teaching, my fine art now means a lot to me; and it is my mission to make personal and meaningful pieces that have a place of pride in people’s lives. My work shown here depicts me, my wife, my cat, my home… subjects from my life. What are your subjects? Let me depict them for you!
