Today we’d like to introduce you to Izzy Eyre.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My musical interest started as young as four years old when I started watching Disney Channel. I actually got my nickname “Izzy” because one of my pre-school teachers would always call me “Izzy McGuire”.
When I was nine, it was Hannah Montana and Selena Gomez. I remember for our school talent that year, I sang “Nobody’s Perfect” and one of my friends did a dance to the song “Love Story” by Taylor Swift. That was the first time I was introduced to her music, and so my songwriting journey began.
I like to say Taylor inadvertently taught me how to write songs. She taught me to use metaphors when talking about love and pain and structure my songs in a way that really tells a story. By elementary school, I started to play guitar, and from then on, there was no stopping me from writing my own music.
In high school, I started “producing” on GarageBand, making songs inspired by pop music, alternative, and rock. Then, sophomore year I started to really take filmmaking seriously, and music took the backseat for a couple of years –I was only writing when I really needed an emotional outlet.
Then in 2020, I was going through a breakup and made an EP in Logic Pro X. What was different this time around was that I had published this EP on all platforms, releasing my original music for the first time. Ever since then, I have been writing, recording, producing, and releasing all of my music.
A question I get all the time is if I write my own music, and I always exhale a bit when asked this because if you listen to my music (at least I think), you can tell how personal it is. All of my songs (aside from a couple of collaborations and features on the producing side) have been written, recorded, and produced solely by me in my bedroom.
Today I have 12 songs released (and many unreleased). Later this year, I plan to release my sophomore EP, taking my songwriting, production, and artistry to the next level.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Through the lens of reception, this journey of releasing music has been wonderful so far. Getting messages from friends and strangers telling me how much they like one of my songs makes me so happy that I have decided to share my music. But I can’t lie and say the numbers don’t get to me sometimes. As someone who is very driven and believes in my music, it’s hard to look at followers, monthly listeners, etc., and not feel disappointed sometimes. But I’m at a point where I’m trying to ground myself and remember it’s not about that, and my time will come.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and producer, I consider myself a pop singer/songwriter. While music is and always will be my therapy and emotional vessel, I also love filmmaking. I just graduated from CSULA with a BA in Film and Media Studies. Basically, I just love telling stories and evoking emotions, haha.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned so far (and I’m sure this will be reinforced throughout my career) is to make shit that YOU like. When it comes to art, there is no right or wrong. There are no rules. I’ve been in sessions and talked with producers before who have said something like, “this part of the song is too long” “let’s take out this instrumental section; it’s kind of random” “we need a stronger hook, this one isn’t good enough” etc, and I’ve realized there is absolutely a time and place for criticism and improvement, but at the end of the day if you love what you have created, fuck anyone else’s opinion.
