Today we’d like to introduce you to Gold Line Quartet.
Hi Gold Line, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After moving to Los Angeles from France in 2017, Jacob Hallman was eager to create a saxophone quartet and play with like-minded saxophonists in the area. Jacob met Dr. Isaac Lopez shortly thereafter and they started to bring the Gold Line Quartet to life.
After searching myriad LinkedIn profiles, watching tons of saxophone videos on YouTube, and sending countless emails and DMs, the Gold Line Quartet finally established itself in 2023 with its current configuration: Dr. Isaac Lopez on soprano saxophone, Dr. Rachel Wolz on alto saxophone, Joseph David Spence on tenor saxophone, and Jacob Hallman on baritone saxophone. The name Gold Line Quartet is inspired by the running of Metro LA’s A Line (formerly Gold Line) crossing from Azusa across the I-210 freeway to Union Station. Gold Line Quartet’s mission is to change the way audiences engage with chamber music by taking listeners on a journey from what is familiar to exploring what’s at the beating heart of classical music today. Our goal is to create an emotionally impactful and thought provoking experience for our audience, here in our home of LA and beyond.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We all maintain our own personal lives and careers, which have grown increasingly rich and chaotic since the founding of the ensemble. But the music we make with each other and the dreams and possibilities of what we want for this group keep us grounded, smoothing out any bumps that might come up along the way.
Since our formation, Jacob welcomed a new child into the world during our first gig as an ensemble. Joseph moved in with his partner of nearly five years and has grown increasingly prolific as a composer and voice actor. Isaac purchased a new soprano saxophone and navigated Los Angeles without a car for six months. Rachel balanced planning her international wedding ceremony while in the process of completing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from UCLA.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
From intimate wedding ceremonies to performing at the Los Angeles National History Museum to the Ojai Playwrights Conference Gala in Malibu, Gold Line Quartet plays a variety of repertoire that fits the need for most occasions.
We sold out our debut recital at Boston Court Pasadena in May 2024. It was an incredible night and our communication on stage was electric. This performance codified our core memorized repertoire and featured The Nations Shall See, a saxophone ensemble work by our very own Joseph David Spence with some of our dear friends and colleagues. Our sincerest thanks to Margaret Starbuck, Jessica Kubzansky, and Manny Prieto at Boston Court Pasadena for their support and facilitating our debut recital.
We have been fortunate to have Our Savior Lutheran Church in Arcadia (of which Jacob and his wife Marija are members) as a home base, testing ground, and recording studio. Church leadership and the congregation there have regularly welcomed our concert programs and are always more than willing to hear anything and everything played on four saxophones.
We are also very proud of what we’ve been able to give back to our community. In March 2025, the Gold Line Quartet organized a Benefit Concert at Our Savior Lutheran Church for the victims of the Eaton Fire. The Fires are a subject that quite literally hit close to home as Jacob had to evacuate from the Eaton Fire coming within 5 blocks of his home. In addition, Isaac, Joseph, and Rachel teach music at St. Matthew’s Parish School which was burned down by the Palisades Fire. After weeks of smelling smoke and frantically checking our phones to see if our neighborhoods would be impacted next, we managed to raise over $5000 and even had Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-27) speak at our event.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
We’re all talented musicians and each have organized roles to contribute to the success of the group. Jacob has a strong entrepreneurial mind and business knowledge. Joseph is an experienced composer and arranger. Isaac brings years of professional performing experience and strong networking skills, both on social media and interpersonally. Rachel keeps the group organized through detailed note keeping and managing the agenda. All of our unique backgrounds and skill sets work together to help us find more places to share our music.
