Meet Ethan Ingram of Silver Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ethan Ingram

Hi Ethan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I took an interest in photography when I was nine years old. I learned by shooting black and white film and taught myself how to develop and print in a makeshift darkroom I setup in our musty basement.

As a teenager, I started assisting professional photographers. I had a bit of an affinity for quickly learning the technical aspects of lighting which helped me to progress quickly as an assistant.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has never been a smooth road. Photography is a very tough industry in general. I was lucky in that I began assisting just as things were transitioning from film to full digital capture which created a lot of opportunities for those like me who learned quickly. Youth was both a blessing and a curse, I was extremely adept, but all too young to be taken seriously, which was always a source of frustration for me early on.
It’s taken some time to mature into my abilities.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a full-time photographer. These days I mostly shoot portraiture and fashion. My bread and butter for the past decade was fashion based products, shoes, handbags, cosmetics, etc.
I specialize now in recreating styles of past decades based on the client’s needs. Often using the lenses and lighting equipment from those eras.

I’m very active in the photo community. I try my best to encourage and teach new photographers. It’s my way of giving back, honoring those who selflessly did the same for me. That’s what I’m most proud of.

My ability to tackle very complicated projects with ease and a seemingly unending amount of patience. I think those attributes set me apart from others.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I watch an immense amount of movies, from the silent era on. I pull a great deal of visual inspiration from them.

I read many biographies these days, I’m a bit of a history buff. One of my favorites is “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom” by T.E. Lawrence.
