Today we’d like to introduce you to Erick Malm.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Erick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The adventure started when I was very young. My Grandfather actually built many of the Homes and Bungalows here in Pasadena/Altadena area. His two sons (my Father and Uncle) worked as his laborers to learn a trade and make some money. Their college education led them to pursue a career in Engineering and Architecture. After I graduated from Cal State L.A., I struggled to find a path that I was confident in. So in the meantime, I did what I knew best; building. I worked on hillside homes in Malibu, and hidden gems in the Valley. I eventually realized that my passion was in the details. The finish work; The Cabinets, Crown, Kitchens and Baths. I was getting good at what I did, and my bosses knew it. I decided to get my own Business License, and become a General Contractor myself. Although I specialized in Custom Kitchen and Bath Design/Build, and due to my attention to details and aim for precision, many of my clients asked if I would build additions, outdoor areas, and more.
For the 30 years I have been in business, I have never done any advertising. I have always been able to rely on the recommendations and referrals of my clients. I have worked for so many nice clients over the years, and still love what I do. Most of my clients to this day will showcase my work to future clients. Since I like to be involved and do much of my own work, along with my team of Professionals, I continue to enjoy watching a set of plans become a reality. I have always believed in not taking on more than I can control, which has kept the quality right where I like it.
Has it been a smooth road?
When you have a child that relies on you, and you know his future is in your hands, you’re inspired to do better. My Grandfather told me that if you’re going to do something, do it right, otherwise, what’s the point.
In an industry of a zillion Contractors, you’ve got to stand out. You’ve got to make a name for yourself that means something. If YOU are not proud of what you’re doing, no one else will be either.
I’ve been knocked down by serious injury, faulty equipment, disasters beyond my control, and the downturn of the building industry. Through the years you learn to cope with just about anything.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry as a whole has seen an increase and revitalization lately. People are staying put and investing in their homes rather than selling. Especially here in Southern California. The taxes and fees you’ll pay when selling and re-buying are much more of a consideration. So Cal is still a very desirable place to live, so I believe it’s only going to get better.
