Today we’d like to introduce you to Erick Del Aguila.
Erick, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Peru, and started playing guitar in punk, rock, and jazz bands in my teens. When I was 17, I moved to the US and went to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston on a scholarship. After graduating, I got offered an assistantship to composer Daniel Licht (RIP) in Los Angeles. He was the composer for Showtime’s TV show “Dexter”, and I owe him so much for giving me my first job, mentoring me, and teaching me the ropes of this crazy industry. Since moving to LA, I got to work on a Warner Bros. studio film, independent films that have played at Sundance, Tribeca, AFI Fest, and TV-shows for Disney/Marvel, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, Netflix, Lifetime, Bravo, SyFy, Apple, and many others. See IMDB: www.imdb.com/name/nm5614184.
I’m very blessed to have had these opportunities and hone my craft in an environment that required so much self-discipline in order to meet crazy deadlines, and perhaps the best part of the job was to be able to record the best orchestras and musicians in LA, in historic places like the Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage at Sony, Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Bros., Capital Studios, EastWest Studios (where The Beach Boys recorded “Pet Sounds”), Henson Studios, and many others.
During this time, I’d also collaborate with Brainfeeder artist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (http://miguelatwoodferguson.com), and he inspired me to release my own music, which led to my self-released EP “Aliuga” (https://soundcloud.com/edelaguila/sets/aliuga-ep).
Nowadays, I try to keep a balance of working on film scores and producing/performing my own music. I recently released a new single called “Pies en la Miel” feat. Mambo Punk and Nico Saba (https://ampl.ink/WERk2), and scored an independent feature film called “Seeds”. I’m also finishing my debut album “Selvagia”, which will be released early next year, and working towards a series of albums with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (the first one, “Lux Imago”, will be released next year as well).
Has it been a smooth road?
Not really. Music for any media usually comes at the end of the production process, and we as composers and producers usually have to deal with a lot of amount of work in such a small period of time. You find yourself dealing with stressful situations, constantly solving problems, hire the right people to help out when needed, triple check all the little details that music demands, while keeping calm and communicating effectively with your directors and producers. All this while having had very little sleep.
At the same time, I have the need to make my own music, so trying to keep the balance of ‘work for hire’, working on your art, staying healthy, and just living your life has been quite a challenge.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
It’s been a privilege to get the opportunities I got, and I’ve had the chance to meet amazingly talented artists, and heroes of mine during these 5 years that I’ve been here. I guess LA is a city where people work so hard (if you can get the work) that you get a feeling of time going by so fast, and it gets harder to keep in touch and spend time with people that you love.
