Meet Emilio Garcia-Sanchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emilio Garcia-Sanchez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Emilio. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I was born in Oakland, CA in 1992. Raised in the Bay Area my whole life, it wasn’t until I was 20 years old that I moved to Southern California—to train and pursue a career in the arts. I now live in Los Angeles & am very fortunate to be a working artist in this community.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Committing yourself to the arts is never a smooth road. There’s real-life struggles. Rent. School debt. Then there’s family. Convincing them you are really “about that life,” in terms of pursuing the arts, is always a tricky conversation.

Creative struggles were once foolishly surrounded around obtaining work, but now it’s more about creating work—which poses, in my opinion, the ultimate most compelling struggle. To do. Don’t get it twisted, I still do audition and collaborate on different project that aren’t mine personally, I just added more to my to-do list.

Really, I got sick of waiting around. And the responsibility to tell my stories really set in. Life isn’t a smooth road, or a least I wouldn’t want mine to be. Where’s the fun in that? Also, there’s for sure about to by typos in this, I apologize for any I miss in advance.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
This is always kind of funny to me, my body really being my own company, strange concept. But maybe not that strange. I’m a creator? A storyteller? I imagine things, and then attempt to attach them to some sort of reality. I like things that tell stories. People or objects or whatever. Like sneakers. Sneakers tell stories.

All sorts of things tell stories; you just have to be able to learn to listen to them. Pretty soon this new Netflix television series will release, beginning of May, I’ll probably be most known for that. I’m most proud of my company when it’s being implemented for the betterment of human-kind.

Example: when I’m teaching art to students. Allowing them to be unapologetically creative. This, I hope, will make a much better world when I’m long gone. That’s what it’s all about.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mother and my brother deserve all the credit, first and foremost.

They sacrificed everything, LITERALLY, EVERYTHING IF YOU’RE THINKING IT THEN THAT’S IT, just so I can be this professional man-child that plays pretend and makes weird things he likes.

And now they rarely get to physically see me. We always hope the sacrifices are worth it.
