Meet Ellie Bae of Gallery CLU in Koreatown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellie Bae.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Before the development of Gallery CLU, I have an art studio, In Art, teaching art to students K-12. In developing Gallery CLU, it all started when I was with my art association, Beloved In Art Association (BIAA) and needed a gallery to exhibit our works. As founder and president of BIAA, I felt that it was appropriate to develop a gallery and provide a place to exhibit our members’ artworks. It was difficult at first but I did not want to give up. What motivated me to continue was being able to exhibit artworks that I wanted to show. I wanted to give the opportunity to exhibit to young and upcoming artists.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When first opening Gallery CLU, it was not an easy road. There were many difficulties with the income of managing the gallery and finding artists to exhibit. Since I had no experience in managing a gallery, I was very lost at first and did not know where to start and promote Gallery CLU.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Gallery CLU is a contemporary art gallery. As a founder of Gallery CLU, I find opportunities to promote Gallery CLU and challenge myself to improve the gallery. As a founder of Gallery CLU, I also own an art studio, In Art, for students K-12. I help young students understand on how to create and plan an exhibition. As an educator and gallery owner, I find it important to provide opportunities for young artists.

What were you like growing up?
I was born in Seoul, Korea and was a very ambitious person. Ever since I was young, I liked to challenge myself and had always set goals. I always dreamed of becoming an artist or working in an art related field.
