Meet Elléna Lourens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elléna Lourens.

Hi Elléna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in South Africa, I began working on personal and collaborative creative projects while in school. Since then I have further pursued illustration, street art, painting and embroidery. I have immersed myself in the creative world, working alongside established artists, as well as furthering my own practice, taking part in shows and creating murals in both South Africa and internationally.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacles I have overcome so far, have luckily for me, been internal. Whether it be a fear of inadequacy or any degree of self-doubt. I would say persistence and a small dose of blind belief have been more than necessary for me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a visual artist, working predominantly in street art and canvas painting. My style lends itself to the past in its representation of ancient symbols, patterns and colour schemes, while maintaining an intuitively current aesthetic through which I seek to redefine emotional iconography. I am happy to be able to travel and create work around the world.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Persistence.
