Today we’d like to introduce you to Dovid Feld
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi my name is Dovid Feld.
I am an architect, and I specialize in residential architecture. Single Family and Multi Family work.
As a child I was always interested in art and design. I loved Lego instruction diagrams and blueprints. The technical images of parts and pieces coming together sparked my curiosity, and lit a design fire under me.
I was also attracted to religion, and as a child I wanted to be a scribe for holy Jewish books. I completed my religious law studies in South Africa in 2008, and decided that I wanted to use my artistic bent, and law background to become an architect.
I began my journey in LA at a small but wonderful school called LAIAD (Los Angeles Institute for Architecture and Design) after serval semesters of architectural basics, I matriculated to SCI-Arc for a masters degree in Architecture.
After graduating, I worked for a few small residential architecture firms, and then cut my teeth with a large corporate firm doing healthcare and higher education.
I always had the desire to open up my own firm, and as my family and my expenses grew I felt like it was time to become a business owner. I was able to garner support from the local development community in the form of a few larger projects. This gave me enough of a runway to quit the corporate grind and get my dream off the ground.
The firm has grown organically over the last 5 years and we are now a leader in Multi Family buildings and ADU work in LA. We enjoy the opportunity to weave our client’s needs, local/state code, and community input into a beautiful and successful project for all stakeholders.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been a lot a challenges along the way.
Pursuing architecture while married can be challenging. It is truly an all encompassing school experience and was really hard to make sure my wife and I had time to spend together during that process. As the children came, carving out the time to be a father and make sure I am in their lives the way they need, and the way I want to be can be a struggle.
We didn’t study business and entrepreneurship at school, so learning on the job has been a fun and challenging ride. Starting a business with a background in the arts and Judaic studies, was not a walk in the park. Learning the ins and outs of hiring and firing, making money while going after your passion, and being very attentive to the client’s needs are all super critical in this business. I am grateful for the journey thus far. I think it has made me a better architect and person.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Feld and Associates?
We are a small to mid size architecture firm specializing in residential work.
We have worked on close to 1,000 ADU units over the last 5 years.
We have worked on more than 500 units of multi family housing over the last 5 years.
We love LA.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I frequently look at master architects of generations past for inspiration. Mies, Louis Kahn, Richard Neutra and others. I also look at many contemporary architects and developers who have created inspirational projects in the Southern California area for inspiration.
