Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna “Bomb Chica” Colón.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
If there was a word to describe me, one word it would be: LIMITLESS. You have to maintain a limitless mindset to do some of the things I have done in my life thus far. I am a plus-size woman and trying to accomplish anything in a world where image and looks and someone’s outer experience is their calling card is very difficult. I broke down walls no one wanted to let me behind. I grew up in Winchester, MA, a small town just outside of Boston. Raised in an immigrant Italian family, I was expected to be involved in the family’s Italian restaurant. I forged another path. I am a creative spirit and my passion was ENTERTAINING. I won a full scholarship to study at Berklee College Of Music in Boston where I graduated with a degree in Music Business & Management and was recognized by institution as one to watch.
While at Berklee, I won my first national singing jingles and sang for Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, and countless others. My songwriting skills also budded during that time and I wrote my first songs which landed in numerous TV and FILM projects. Determined to continue my success, I moved to NYC and within a short time was singing on national commercials for huge brands, being called back for Broadway shows and co-wrote and sang my 1st Top 3 Billboard dance hit. I then moved to LA landing major national commercials, two years in a row for Big Lots, singing on countless other ads for Jack IN The Box, State Farm, Dos Equis, etc., lending my voice to projects for Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas, etc. and then finding myself on Season 8 of America’s Got Talent as a quarter semi-finalist and singing on the Radio City Music Hall stage for a viewing audience of 10 million people. All the while running my own Vocal Coaching & Development Business: Deanna’s Vocal Studio, as well as acting, hosting for live events and radio, being a voice over talent and songwriting for over 200 film and tv projects and major artists like: K POP’s Red Velvet, Cody Simpson, Mya, Cassie, Charlie Wilson, to name a few! The Creativity didn’t stop with entertainment – it also led back to the kitchen.
I auditioned for Fox’s MASTERCHEF with Gordon Ramsey and made the Top 20, winning a coveted white apron from the judges. That experience has led me to in home cooking demonstrations, small private catering for events, online cooking classes and hopefully someday my own segment on a tv show! I think BIG though and the dream is my own show: I’ve always said I am the product of Kelly Clarkson and Rachel Ray having a baby 😉 . In 2020, I added management to my team signed a deal with Castle Sky. I am excited to see where this year takes me. So many people are calling 2020 “a bad year”. I never have. I believe great things are brewing and greater things will come and I am forever thinking LIMITLESS.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My struggle with my weight has been a struggle but not anymore. On my path of self-love, self-worth and appreciation, I have embraced what society calls “flaws” and instead accepted them as the things that make me unique. I become a Body Positivity/Self Love Advocate and Influencer. I started a (omit the a) “The Masterpiece Movement” which began with a song I wrote and sang called “I Am A Masterpiece”. It also became a weekly talk show. I throw body positive events as well as have a line of merchandise that can be found at TheIdentityOfShe.com (All Voyage LA readers will get a 10% off discount on the site using my discount code: BOMBCHICA) The Masterpiece Movement is a mindset: You are a masterpiece, on a journey but perfect with every step, just as you are! I celebrate all bodies, sharing inspiration through transparency with my own journey and encourage everyone to love and accept all that they are. I have been challenged with negativity regarding my body and meet that with positivity. @TheMasterpieceMovement has over 11k followers on Instagram and is growing as more people are desiring platforms that are inclusive.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As a personality and influencer, everything I do encompasses my business. Bomb Chica Entertainment is the umbrella that houses my singing (for all projects, artists, ads), songwriting (film, tv, artists, commercials, etc.), my acting (on stage and screen), voice over work, hosting for live events and radio, and my Vocal Coaching business. I am so proud to maintain and wear all of these hats well and to have success in all of them. Being a plus-size, woman – it has been difficult to create and maintain and believe in yourself solely… but I have done it and I want to inspire and encourage others to do the same for themselves. If you can see it, you can be it. You have to take the first step and then stay focused. The follow through is so important. The words need to become actions. What sets me apart from others is my LIMITLESS mentality. I believe in myself 1 Billion percent and that kind of commitment and belief in oneself is extremely hard to achieve, but is possible with daily practice!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I hope this doesn’t sound redundant, but my belief in myself. I truly feel there is nothing I can not do. I follow my plans up with necessary actions and at the same time maintain balance in my life. I work very hard Monday through Friday but the weekend is sacred to me and the time with my family and friends. Not saying I will never work on the weekend, but I try not to. I attempt to live life on a line of: Living like I’ll make it to 100 and living like there is no tomorrow. The work hard/play hard mentality is an important quality to helping me to find balance and peace in my life. How you envision your life is key! I also constantly practice visualization and make at least 2 vision boards a year.
