Today we’d like to introduce you to Crissy Saenz.
Hi Crissy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a low-income household in East Los Angeles. I was quite the problem child – was on probation at 13 for grand theft and got transferred to 3 different high schools. I ultimately graduated from Roosevelt High in Boyle Heights. I grew up doing a lot of things a kid shouldn’t do and seeing a lot of things a kid shouldn’t see. I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety and PTSD. I’ve also experienced panic attacks and depression. Coping mechanisms I’ve used over the years have been soothing scents (candles, lotions, perfumes) and tranquil audio (music, nature sounds, raindrops). This is how I came up with the idea for my business, Kalmado: A high-end candle line that utilizes Aromasound Therapy to soothe mental health conditions. Today, Kalmado has been featured in swag bags at the Oscars, Critics Choice Awards, and Calabasas Film Festival. We’ve also donated to various nonprofits. You can find Kalmado online and The London West Hollywood.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. As mentioned, I was a problematic kid whose dad was always at work. I was primarily raised by my great-grandmother, who was both mentally and physically abusive.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My background has been in real estate for the past decade. I have been a licensed real estate agent and have been in both sales and asset management. Additionally, I am majoring in Real Estate Business at California State University Northridge.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
My son, Omi, will be 13 this year. He has been my primary motivation. Not only do I do my best to set an example for him, but little does he know that he helps me, too, when I am struggling mentally. Thinking of him simply makes life worth all its struggles.
