Meet Clayton Guiltner of GC FIlms LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clayton Guiltner

Hi Clayton, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my career 29 years ago in live theatre, touring across the United States as an actor during the first few years. After a while, I grew tired of living out of a suitcase and became highly interested in directing. This led me to take a job as a writer-director for a film production company in Orlando, Florida. This was a significant shift, transitioning from theatre to film. I learned a great deal about writing, directing, and the development, production, and post-production processes. But once again, I felt the urge to return to the theatre world. I began leading some acting classes in the Orlando area and discovered that teaching and coaching actors was a perfect fit for my skill set and personality.

One day, a student in my class, who happened to be a teacher at a local high school, told me I was such a good instructor that I should consider applying for an open drama teacher position at his school. I gave it a shot and found it to be a deeply fulfilling job. This experience led me to pursue teaching at the college level, which I have done on and off for the past couple of decades. Simultaneously, I have continued to direct and write for both theatre and film and eventually started a theatre company in New York City. This was also when I became interested in producing and started learning more about the business of the industry. I directed several productions and organized play festivals over the years in New York before moving to Los Angeles.

Once in L.A., I was invited to become a lifetime member of the Director’s Unit at the Actors Studio under the mentorship of Lou Antonio and Martin Landau. My mentors encouraged me to seriously pursue film and television directing. I found the Los Angeles film industry both frightening (pushing me out of my comfort zone) and exhilarating. I felt I had much to offer and have been developing my directing career in L.A. for the past decade. In addition to directing, I have continued teaching and currently serve as Faculty Lead for the Entertainment Business program at The Los Angeles Film School. I also work as an adjunct professor for the Performing Arts Department at Ventura College when needed.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve always considered myself fortunate to pursue a career as a storyteller and feel lucky to have mostly worked in my field in some capacity over the past several decades. The journey has been bumpy, with many challenges along the way. Like many creatives, I’ve faced moments of financial uncertainty. There were times when I struggled to pay bills and stay afloat as jobs became scarce or pay rates fluctuated. Coming from a modest background, I didn’t receive much financial support from my family. However, unlike some creatives, I’ve had the benefit of teaching in addition to my directing and writing work, which has provided some stability at times. Even so, there have been years when I had to find ways to make ends meet to continue my creative work.

Another challenge has been the occasional difficulty in finding common ground with others. Often, people don’t quite understand what I do or how I think, which can feel isolating, especially at social gatherings where friends talk about careers in the medical field or corporate America—lifestyles I don’t relate to much. There’s also the ongoing struggle to stay in the creative zone, constantly finding my voice and expressing it through my work. Staying focused, fresh, and relevant in an ever-changing industry is a continual challenge.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about GC FIlms LLC?
I run GC Films LLC, a Los Angeles-based film development and production company deeply rooted in the performing arts and film industry. Specializing in writing, directing, and producing for both stage and screen, I have enjoyed working across multiple genres. My most recent project, a feature film titled Hope’s Hollywood Christmas, will be released on Amazon this November.

People often ask me, “Why a Christmas movie?” While I take pride in directing a variety of genres and exploring different storytelling styles, I was particularly inspired to write and direct this holiday film. Hope’s Hollywood Christmas is special because it blends the magic of the holiday season with themes of second chances, family, and redemption. The story follows a struggling single mother who, after a failed music career in Nashville, returns to Los Angeles and takes a job as a caregiver for an aging movie star. Together, they uncover a scam and, with the help of the star’s driver, form an unlikely bond. Along the way, they rediscover love, hope, and the importance of human connection.

What sets me apart is the integration of my extensive theatre background with my work in film, along with the mentorship I’ve received from industry icons. Having studied under renowned figures like Martin Landau, my work embodies a commitment to storytelling, character depth, and the collaboration required to bring compelling stories to life. I also pride myself on helping aspiring actors, directors, and producers develop their skills in ways that connect them with industry professionals and prepare them for professional-level opportunities. This blend of experience, mentorship, and passion for storytelling informs everything I create.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
One important aspect of my career is giving back to others. I genuinely enjoy connecting with people in the industry, discussing projects, and exchanging ideas. I encourage aspiring actors, directors, writers, and producers to reach out and introduce themselves. You never know where a conversation might lead or how it could inspire your next step. After all, building connections and sharing insights often opens doors to new opportunities and creative inspiration.
