Today we’d like to introduce you to Cici Voise.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cici. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a recording artist and work with Hollywood biggest stylists. A few years back, I was in a session with a stylist for a music video I was shooting. He asked me: ” How do you want to look? What’s the vibe of the outfit you are looking for?” I wanted to portrait a strong woman who was ” badass” (yes, it’s the word that I use) and with a little edge.
For reference, my music is edgy pop and kinda confidence driven, so I thought it’d match the style. Well, so he pulled out so many options of fur and leather and explained to me that to have the esthetic I was looking for, I had to wear fur or leather. So I asked:” How about faux fur or faux leather?”. He became so offended and insisted that only the “real deal” would make me look strong. To which I replied, It doesn’t make me look strong to wear another being’s skin, it makes me look heartless”. Then, right there, in front of my whole production crew, he yelled at me and said I was a brat, ungrateful for his time and that he will refuse to work with closed-minded artists. Not only I was humiliated, but in my opinion, he was the close-minded one.
Needless to say, that I got so many backfires for the incident and it was an always never-ending justification of why I didn’t want to wear a slaughtered innocent soul. It got me so mad and frustrated, it fueled me to start my own clothing brand. My goal was to create a completely cruelty-free brand that could make me look “badass”, “edgy” and strong as a woman. Additionally, I wanted to create a space where women would be able to express themselves without rules or judgments. I had the slogan ” Be your own brand” when I started because it was crucial for me that my future customers could feel as free and as creative as they wanted to, without harming another being or feeling like they had no options. It had to be a space that meant freedom for all with an urban feel, so I called it Blue District.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The responses have been pretty positive so far, my customers understand the mission behind trying to be a mindful shopper and the ones who don’t know seem interested in being educated about the fashion industry.
Blue District – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Blue District is run solely by me, I design and make all the visuals come to life. I am passionate with creating art. Music being one of them, but designing clothes as well. I Love having the craziest ideas and making them come to life. I do all my visuals with photography and videography myself because I love the way clothes can take you on a journey and photos transport you to a world where everything is being said without a word.
I am so happy I have been able to reach such a wide audience thanks to the internet and I am always listening to feedback and trying to improve. The community is so loyal and compassionate, it is the most rewarding feeling to see that you can make girls happy and feel pretty without compromising ethics or budget. I am so proud to say I have found a way to provide, ethically made, sustainable garments on a very affordable budget, so there are no excuses why one should continue to support the horrors of fast fashion and cruel practices. I think what sets me apart is that I offer a very edgy, urban vibe with a green touch as opposed to other vegan brands which have a more bohemian feel (which I love). I feel like the urban modern woman can find herself loving a lot of my pieces and not compromise her budget.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I was very honored and excited to be part of the 1st Vegan Fashion Week held here in Los Angeles. I got to meet so many compassionate people who dedicate their lives to change the industry and make a better world for the future generations. Also, having celebrities such as Kate Nash, Miss Montana, Maggie Geha and Miley Cyrus wearing Blue District is such an honor.
