Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Osorio.
Christopher, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, specifically Eagle Rock/Highland Park area. I’m a second generation Salvadoran American, and If someone would’ve asked as a kid what I wanted to be when I grew up, a Special FX Makeup Artist would’ve never crossed my mind! My mom passed away when I was very young, so growing up my Father would be working all the time. There wasn’t very much money for a babysitter, so my dad would take me to the nearby video store and allow me to rent three movies every other weekend. These movies were basically my babysitter. I was obsessed with horror films — Attack of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space was my ish! But, I also loved fantasy films, like Willow, The Witches, The Dark Crystal, and Beetlejuice. And as a child all the creatures, special effects, makeup all looked real to me, and never did I know about all the people who were responsible in making these fascinating characters.
This was a dream job I never saw myself doing. I went to college and had my attempt at corporate work. I spent 10+ years working in an office with a feeling always in the back of my head telling me that there was something more. After some hard retrospect into my life, I made the decision to enroll in makeup school. I have to say that was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Once in school, I started creating and just letting my imagination run wild. It was where I was meant to be, and things started making sense and falling into place. I’m still learning as we speak and I’m definitely paying my dues into this industry, but I wouldn’t be anywhere else. I love what I do, and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There has definitely been many challenges. I’m 32 years old and I’ve I still recently stepped into the makeup world which has brought it’s own set of obstacles and insecurities. The makeup industry has had such an influx of popularity mainly due to social media and reality shows like Face-Off and Skin Wars. So the competition for makeup artists out there is fierce. However, It all comes down to your determination and consistency. This is more than a career for me and I hope to continue working hard in order to create some incredible characters for future films to come!
KRS Makeup Effects – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a freelance makeup artist and creating a mix between beauty and monsters is what I do. I love merging the two into something that is disturbing but still you can’t look away. The entire process of designing, sculpting and applying a makeup is incredible and I’m always ready to make some magic happen. There’s no greater pleasure than seeing your hard work come to life on the big screen! If anyone has any ideas for things they’d like to make happen, I’m all ears and would love to work with you.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I love my craft and my work reflects that passion. Sometimes I think to myself on how lucky I am to be working on films, making monsters and painting faces. It’s a dream come true! And in which case I’d say my fondest moment would be the day I realized this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It was completely unorthodox and slightly terrifying quitting my day job and delve straight into makeup, but I’d have to say it’s been the best decision I’ve ever done!
