Meet Calabasas Makeup Artist: Romy Baral

Today we’d like to introduce you to Romy Baral.

Romy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I was little I was always drawing. I found it hard to focus in school so I would draw on all my papers. It was an outlet for me and helped me a lot. Even in restaurants I drew and still draw on napkins, coasters, receipts etc… I could be in a loud and noisy restaurant or bar and completely block out everything around me and become super focused. Growing up I was always the person my good friends would have me do their makeup for events dances, prom etc. I took about 6 years oil painting classes with my sister and would continue to draw in my free time. I graduated from MUD then shortly after started working doing weddings, college films, and photo shoots just to start building my portfolio. I interned for a few special effects companies such as Amalgamated Dynamics Inc and New Deal Studios. Also, working in retail I have realized my passion really lies in fashion artistry makeup and Avant Guard makeup. Right now I am in Esthetician school to broaden my knowledge on how to take care of your skin before and after makeup applications.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely, being more introverted and an artist at heart I have found it can work against you and I have found it hard to sell myself so to speak in the past. In a perfect world, I would like my artwork to speak for itself. But you just have to get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable and push yourself to get out of your comfort zone.

What’s your outlook for the industry over the next 5-10 years?
I believe the makeup industry will be advancing much like most companies. With advanced technology that delivers a faster result.

What has been the primary challenge you’ve faced?
The biggest challenge is finding a balance between work and your personal life. For me, that is something I am constantly working on achieving.

What would you tell someone who is just starting out?
My advice for others would be, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Make that makeup Instagram even if the pictures are perfect. Connect with people always because you never know where it could lead you. Be true to your own personal beliefs and always see everyone in their best light 🙂
