Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Davis.
Scott, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember I’ve always had a camera on me. There was no question that photography would somehow be a part of my life. The summer after high school I attended The Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Montana. It was after that course I decided to make the move to LA from Kalispell, MT. LA was always my destination, again, for as long as I can remember, and photography my tool. I’ve now been here for 10 years, photographing anything and everything. There really isn’t a job I turn down and love the challenge of each project. I enjoy shooting both on location and at my home studio in Burbank.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. More so since making the move to LA. Lots of odd jobs, waiting tables, I even had my own one man cleaning service (Scott Gets Squeaky Clean) for a while. It took a good 6 years to get to the point where photography was my main and only focus.
Who, or what, deserves a lot of credit for where you are today?
My husband has put a lot of trust and faith into my work. He has really pushed and encouraged my to explore my art.
Being almost completely self taught, I’ve learned and taken inspiration from the great photographers. Ansel Adams and his way of creating dramatic landscapes before Photoshop was a thing. Of course Annie Leibovitz and her use of light to tell deep stories in a single photo. I also love the portrait work of Robert Mapplethorpe. Striking images that tell so much truth in the simplest ways.
What kind of work do you look forward to most?
I always look forward to doing travel and landscape photography. I think that’s really where my passion for photography began. Living in Montana, just outside Glacier National Park and seeing the natural beauty and wanting to share what I was seeing. I try and take photo road trips, mainly around California, as often as I can and just explore and shoot. Being out on my own with my camera is really where I find myself being the most creative.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I honestly don’t think I’d do anything differently. The struggles and lessons learned have all played a part in the artist I am today. I appreciate my path, both the good and the bad, and like to think it shows in my work.
