Hi Bill, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After graduating with his Masters in Business Administration, Bill Shepard kept hearing the same complaints from fellow small-business owners about their bookkeepers: 1. I can never get in touch with my bookkeeper and they don’t respond when I call or text. 2. My bookkeeper doesn’t pay our bills on time and I’m tired of the complaints and late fees. 3. My bookkeeper can’t explain my financial statements to me or tell me how my business is doing. Bill knew there had to be a better way to do bookkeeping, so he created Bill Shepard Consulting. Bill Shepard Consulting provides better bookkeeping for Los Angeles’ small business owners by providing responsive, personalized, and affordable accounting and advice.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With American small businesses facing the daily challenges of COVID-19, many entrepreneurs found themselves faced with difficult choices and undesirable options. Bill Shepard swiftly reacted by familiarizing himself with the ever-changing landscape of government assistance and the appropriate protocols needed to oversee procurement. Through his tireless and methodical actions, Bill was instrumental in securing relief packages and grants of various sizes that helped his clients keep their small business afloat while at the same time, pivoting to the “new normal”. As new clients are regularly onboarded, the major questions asked are about aid available and the procedures necessary to secure government assistance. With most American businesses working towards the same goal, there are no guarantees, but Bill is proud of his success rate and his clients have been most appreciative.

Bill Shepard is a boutique agency that oversees the financial processes of several small businesses in the LA area. His clients range from top attorneys in Beverly Hills to high-end art galleries in Downtown Los Angeles. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Bill Shepard and his team all work remotely and regularly interface with clients through video conferencing. Each client has a unique set of deliverables required monthly and Bill Shepard Consulting is proud of the tailored services they are able to provide. From traditional bookkeeping services to in-depth business consulting, Bill and his associates make themselves vital members of each team and become invested in the success of each business. With regular updates and creative thinking, Bill Shepard Consulting is far more than just “data entry” bookkeeping. Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
COVID-19 has forced all of us to get creative and be flexible. You need to be prepared to make adjustments to the way you conduct business as local, state, and federal mandates change sometimes on a day-to-day basis. The need for an emergency cash reserve could not be more apparent. Those who had some money saved are in much better financial position than those who haven’t. However, no business I work with has cash reserves on hand to last being shut down for ten months or longer. So my other lesson learned is: if your government or nonprofits offers your business assistance, take it. Don’t be too proud or operate on the assumption that “things will go back to normal soon” because we are operating in some pretty uncertain times. And in times of uncertainty…cash is king.
