Today we’d like to introduce you to Trophy Model Angela Bowie.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Angela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m Angela L. Bowie a native of Greenwood Mississippi. In 1995 A family tragedy caused me to move to Chicago. After surprisingly being approached to do a modeling job for a local salon. I accepted and claimed a small spot on the cover.
Clutching onto the lightning bolt sensation consuming my very being, I decided to step out of my reality as I knew it and pursue a career in a world where the illusion is that all you need is the mask of beauty outside. Contrary to that thought, being in front of the camera activated my inner beauty! One that I didn’t understand until I saw it on a captured image. It was exciting and I quickly became honored to share that part of myself with the world. Besides the gnarling winds and below-freezing temperatures, the Windy City is well known for its print models. It didn’t take much for me to decide that I was up for the challenge.
After three years of freelancing, I was eventually able to sign with a small agency called Emphasis Models of Chicago. I successfully landed several covers of Lifestyle and Hair magazine and campaigns at various trade shows. After meeting the road manager of famous R&B singer R.Kelly, Cheryl Cobbs from California. I was signed to her management company, Childlike Inc which later becoming CM-7. She encouraged me to relocate.
In 2000 I took her advice and moved to Los Angeles California to continue pursuing both my modeling and acting career. I landed a part for the character ‘Bootylicious’ in an independent film called “Up Against the 8 Ball”. Soon after was Ice cube’s popular movies, “Friday After Next” which I was featured. I played the neighbor, Tasha. That exposure helps me become a contestant on a reality T.V show called ‘Popularity Contest, it was filmed in Texas. Funny thing is, Layla & I were the two contestants from California and we got dismissed first!
A career highlight for me was being a featured model for L’Oreal-N.Y Mazani. A while later I became the face of fashion fair cosmetics. In 2002 I was introduced to executive producer Ron Weisner by my friend Kym Whitley. He immediately hired me as a Trophy Model for his next Award show. I continue to work as his main TM for the next nine years, doing BET Awards, Grammys, Espy Awards, and other private Awards ceremonies in New York at the Apollo theatre.
I decided to write my autobiography after hearing from so many friends that I had an amazing life story! I titled it Testimony of a Trophy Model~the ugly truth behind the beauty! After it was published, I felt like I was morphing into a brand, so I started creating hats & t-shirts with my logo and giving them out at parties and to close friends. My second book ‘Eat like a Trophy Model was published in November. It’s a pescetarian lifestyle cookbook that most people can easily enjoy!
I’m currently writing a script for my first book, in hopes of turning it into a movie. Also working on my fashion line, Trophy Model couture.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I first started out as a model, I was a single mom of three. The biggest obstacle for me was trying to be as confident as the other models appeared to be, not to mention slim! They were usually smaller than me as I had curves. Now that I look back, It bothered me more than it should have.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Trophy Model Production is a work in progress. A one women show if you will, that I’m building solo from the ground up. Writing and producing for up and coming talent of all genres, will definitely be the catalyst that opens doors for this company. I have already produced two gospel shows for artists and a fashion show. We have big hope, As I build traction with producing my film in 2020.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would like to think that my children were my biggest supporter as they were also my motivation. They were small when I started but they were team players even then.
I have to say and most women may not like this if you watch the news that is. But had it not been for me meeting R Kelly in Chicago I would never have moved to California. He insisted that his road manager help me in my endeavors. I thank God that she accepted and took me under her wings. Also once in Los Angeles Kym Whitley befriended me and made the introduction to executive producer Ron Weisner and I, that how Trophy Model was created.
