Meet Andrea Price of Andrea Evolves in Studio City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Price.

Andrea, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve done art my entire life. I initially began with drawing as a kid. I was obsessed! Once I reached high school, my Mother suggested trying out painting after a bad experience with my drawing teacher. I fell in love on the first day and I’ve been painting ever since. I also took my first graphic design class in high school and found a love for Photoshop. No one outside of my family and friends knew I was an artist for many years. I decided to share my work publicly and announce myself via social media as an artist in 2011 after a near death experience. That year I participated in my first group show and sold my first piece of art.

I began doing art shows here and there but was struggling to find my voice as an artist. I kept experimenting and trying different ways creating. I’ve always had a love for texture and utilizing multiple senses in art but was unsure of how to incorporate that into my work. In 2016, I created my own recipe for a texture paste and began experimenting and found my own style. I was finally proud of what I was creating and I believe others began to recognize that in my work too. I began using lighting, resin, wood and other things to expound upon my idea of textured art.

In addition, I began to dive deeper through self-portraiture to gain a better understanding of lighting and composition. Sharing these on social media gained a bit of traction to my work. From there, I created and collaborated on projects for many people/companies and had the opportunity to explore other avenues of creative expression such as art direction and photography. I worked closely with music group Watch the Duck, who brought me out to LA, as their creative director. They also got me into DJ’ing. I went on tour last year opening as their DJ and would paint live during my set. Since I’ve worked on campaigns with Adidas, Bombay Sapphire, AT&T, As I Am, Sol Republic, Sony Music, and more.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a spiraling, winding road. I’ve struggled with self-doubt, fear, and tons of rejection. I’ve wanted to quit more times than I can remember. Yet, every time I quit I was more miserable than when I was struggling as an artist. My attempted suicide in 2011, (that near death experience I mentioned earlier) was the biggest bump I’ve faced thus far but it was also the catalyst to get me to surrender to becoming an artist. You can’t fight who you innately are. It was the best worst decision I ever made. I’ve dropped everything in attempts of becoming a full-time artist so many times! I’ve lost jobs, apartments, relationships, self-worth all in pursuit of the dream. It’s all been worth it because it led me here. Without those types of experiences, I wouldn’t be as appreciative of where I am now. They taught me resilience, how to trust my instincts and to honor my calling.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Andrea Evolves – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am mostly known as a portrait and abstract painter however I do also work in graphic design. I dabble a bit in photography and DJ’ing as well. I am most proud of my versatility as an artist and my ability to flip between mediums and combine mediums to create things. Such as painting while I’m DJ’ing. I believe the way in which I express art is what sets me apart. I don’t allow myself to be confined to one medium which is different from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity of LA. It’s so multicultural and vivid! You’re allowed total creative freedom here without shame. People are allowed to express themselves here regardless of how “society” may see them. There’s layers to everyone here. No one is only what you see on the surface, they’re all multifaceted. So many people are celebrated here, that are persecuted elsewhere.

The traffic is the WORST.
