Today we’d like to introduce you to Andre Stewart
Hi Andre, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Came to California in the early 90s, I got started doing sketch comedy with a bunch of talented people, then I got to be in my first web series called “everyday detectives” where in this episode I got to be filmed being chased the funny thing about that the camera operator told me to slow down, but my favorite part about that is I didn’t really had a set script and got to in the last episode be a silly as I wanted to be. Little did I know the people I worked with that day was going to change my life later on. Speed forward to 2020, I just started to write a script that was going to change my life forever, in year’s time I was convinced by my co writer and producer James Garcia . To further than a web series go for a feature, well it ended up being a short feature film called “Torture For Two” which just so happens to going to be on Tubi soon and in a couple of weeks on the app TVEI, it’s so if like Tubi but for all kinds of independent films. But after the film was done the length of it was too long to be a short for most film competitions and not long enough for a real feature, but I put it out there made finalists 2 separate times at the liftoff film festival and so I brought me here to this point in time where I’m already working on multiple scripts and hopefully I’m as lucky with these next scripts as I was with “Torture For Two” made some awesome people and friendships I hope that last a lifetime.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not as smooth as I wanted it to be, two years ago I found out I was on the spectrum and that sort of cleared up the confusion in my life where I didn’t get along with a lot of people along the way, but it set a course to meet the current set of people that guided me to where I am now.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a creator of film, I like telling different kinds of stories just to see how people react to what the content is telling them, like leaving a hidden message for them to leave with after watching one of my future films.I specialize in just being straight forward and different that most directors that I know, I hope the different styles I set to use will set me apart from everyone especially if they’re not on the spectrum, you’ll see a clear difference from the rest of the field.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Filming “Torture For Two” was the biggest risk because I didn’t go to film school, I was using my own money and having people like James Garcia and Adrian Izquieta with more experience help with my vision for the film, but it ended up working out in the end because everything just kept falling into place, many times I wanted to quit but at the current moments I was dealing with slow post production, to missing ques from my actors on set because I was in awe of being on an actual set, to being rejected for not being exactly what film festivals wanted because of the odd length of the project. It’s worth it if you’re strong enough to deal with the storm, turns out I was.
