Meet Amy Vandever of Rolling Hills Estates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Vandever.

Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved playing with hair, but I never imagined it could be a real career. Growing up, I was constantly experimenting with my own hair or doing my friends’ even when I had no idea what I was doing. It was just something I loved. As a right-brained, creative person, I’ve always been drawn to making something out of nothing, whether it was with hair, art, or whatever I could get my hands on. The world and hair have always been my canvas.

As a teenager, I thought work was supposed to be boring, just something you did to get paid. I never realized you could actually love what you do and make a living from it. I’ve always been passionate about people, connection, and helping others feel like the best, most authentic version of themselves.

When I first went to college, I explored psychology and child development because I’ve always been fascinated by people’s stories, why they are the way they are, how they think, and what shapes their behavior. Eventually, I found a way to bring all of that together in a career that’s creative, personal, and deeply fulfilling.

Now, as a stylist and the owner of Coral Moss Salon, I get to merge my love for beauty, people, and the planet. My salon is 95% sustainable, something I’m incredibly proud of. The name Coral Moss reflects both hair and nature, rich in texture, color, and life. It’s a reminder that beauty and sustainability can grow hand in hand.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I worked at many different salons over the years, trying to find my place. I had some incredible experiences where I was able to watch and learn from incredibly talented hairdressers who helped shape and inspire me. But I also went through tough times, moments where I was undervalued and taken advantage of for far too long.

Those experiences were challenging but they pushed me. They taught me to work harder, stand up for what I believe in, and most importantly, know my worth. Every step, whether good or bad, led me to where I am now, doing what I love in a space I created from the heart for both myself and my clients.

At Coral Moss Salon, my goal is to make every client feel special, seen, and uniquely themselves. I truly love helping people feel confident, beautiful, and connected to their most authentic self.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

I’m a hairstylist and owner of Coral Moss Salon, a 95% sustainable, intimate studio salon.

I specialize in dry cutting, low-maintenance lived-in color, gray blending, and I-tip extensions. I love working with natural texture and helping clients embrace their hair’s natural movement rather than working against it.

What sets me apart is the value I place on communication and connection. I always book a 30-minute consultation for new full-service clients before we begin. This gives us time to discuss hair goals, history, and any past frustrations so we can get aligned and create a plan that truly works. I’ve found that many times, clients’ dissatisfaction comes down to communication, listening, understanding, and a simple tweak can make all the difference.

My goal is to create hair that grows out beautifully, so you can go longer between appointments and feel free, not tied to your calendar.

I’m especially proud of the relationships I’ve built with my clients. Over time, many have become like family, and the trust we share is a big part of why I do what I do. Creating that bond and helping clients feel their best means so much to me.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’d love to connect with other local sustainable businesses! As a full-time business owner and mom, I’m always looking to collaborate and share ideas on how we can support each other. You can find me on Instagram @amyzinghair, where I post about my day-to-day life, hair transformations, and how I stay sustainable.

If you’re interested in supporting sustainable beauty, I also carry retail products which come in packaging made from ocean waste plastic. Such a great way to keep beauty green! Let’s connect and keep the conversation going!
