Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Quinn.
Hi Amy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello! My name is Amy Quinn, and I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist based in the beautiful beach town of El Segundo, California. For over 16 years, I’ve had the profound honor of walking alongside individuals on their healing journeys—work that continues to inspire and humble me every day.
I’m also a wife, a mother to two incredible children (Ariella and Rocky), and a lifelong lover of the ocean, especially dolphins and whales. I find joy in movement, whether through running, yoga, or simply exploring nature outside. My passion for healing and connection is deeply rooted in both my personal and professional experiences.
I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in a loud, loving Italian family as the middle child and only daughter. School was a challenge for me, as I live with ADHD and dyslexia, but I always thrived socially and athletically. I earned scholarship opportunities from Ivy League schools for Cross Country and Track, but my heart was elsewhere and from a very young age, I dreamed of becoming a dolphin trainer.
That dream began at age three, when I fell in love with an Amazon River Dolphin named “Chuckles” at the Pittsburgh Aquarium. I felt an immediate and deep connection with him, one that made me feel seen, safe, and understood. That early bond with the ocean stayed with me and shaped my path forward.
When I was 18, my parents encouraged me to attend college by offering me the chance to take part in a “Dolphins in Depth” course at The Dolphin Academy in Curaçao. I jumped at the opportunity and spent the next five summers training there, even working with the Curaçao Dolphin Therapy and Research Center. Those experiences were life-changing, not just professionally, but personally. Swimming alongside these intelligent beings helped me heal from anxiety, disordered eating, impulsivity, and trauma. The dolphins helped me regulate my nervous system, reconnect with joy, and experience deep emotional safety.
During that time, I also pursued my Master’s degree in Social Work and wrote my thesis on Dolphin-Assisted Therapy for the treatment of eating disorders, which I’m proud to say received a perfect score. The feedback from my professors and mentors encouraged me to keep exploring the intersection of oceanic connection and mental health.
After moving to California in 2012 with my husband, I began building what would later become Your Beautiful Beginning, a soul connecting adventure rooted in joy, embodiment, and nature. In 2016, I launched our Wild Dolphin Wellness Retreats, which have since taken place in Hawaii, Puerto Vallarta, and the Bahamas. These retreats are immersive, healing experiences focused on releasing old unsupportive patterns, embracing joy and play, and connecting deeply with the dolphins—and with each other—as “one pod.”
To date, we’ve hosted over 10 retreats, and each one has reaffirmed my belief in the power of community, the ocean, and the wisdom of these beautiful creatures. Healing doesn’t just happen individually, but it happens in connection with others. The dolphins remind us of that over and over again. They teach us to surrender ego, to embrace presence, and to open our hearts to each other and to ourselves.
This work is my calling, and I feel incredibly honored to be able to serve others on their path toward healing, self-love, and embodied joy. I truly believe that it takes a village to thrive and I’m grateful every day to be part of that village.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha! No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road and that’s life, right? It constantly throws us challenges, and we grow through them. My journey has been filled with conflicting messages, inner battles, and moments of real uncertainty.
After I got married, everything shifted for me. I was terrified that I had made a mistake. I kept telling my husband that we weren’t meant to be, that we were too different. I’ve always been a free spirit, someone who needs room to explore and fly. But as it turns out, God had other plans for me.
I married a man who is strong, loyal, and deeply grounded. He didn’t try to change me, however, he challenged my fears, set healthy boundaries, supported my dreams, and sat with me through waves of anxiety when all I wanted to do was run. And believe me, I tried to run—many times. But his steady love and unwavering belief in our marriage kept me grounded.
Even now, marriage doesn’t come easy for me. But over the years, I’ve realized that our relationship has given me and our family a kind of freedom I had always longed for but couldn’t quite recognize at the time. It’s shown me that true connection doesn’t take away your independence, it actually strengthens it.
I’m fiercely independent by nature, competitive by spirit, and also deeply tender. I crave intimate connection and meaningful adventure with people from all walks of life. I believe God placed me on this Earth to love deeply and to help others learn to do the same. That’s at the core of who I am.
My clients, friends, and family, often tell me that they feel loved and safe when they’re with me. That is, to me, the most beautiful compliment. And it’s one I hold close to my heart.
Today, I love in ways that no longer compromise my health or my mental well-being. That’s been a powerful shift and a blessing beyond words. My faith plays a huge role in that. I have a strong, deeply personal relationship with God, and I pray often for guidance and clarity. That connection continually leads me back to compassion, kindness, and love—both for myself and for others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I run two businesses that reflect both my clinical expertise and my passion for healing through nature. My private practice, Amy Ruffolo Quinn, LCSW, CEDS, focuses on therapy and eating disorder recovery, while Your Beautiful Beginning, LLC offers Wild Dolphin Wellness Retreats that combine mental health, somatic work, and the healing power of the ocean.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
If I could offer any advice, it would be this:
Seek out people who are doing what you dream of doing and meet them! Ask questions. Be curious, be compassionate, and stay open during your exploration. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Believe in yourself and in your capacity to grow, even when the path feels uncertain.
Surround yourself with people who believe in you, who cheer for your goals, and who lift you higher. And just as importantly, give back. Help those who have less privilege than you. Volunteer, serve at nonprofits, and be of service in your community.
Find a Higher Power, something greater than yourself, that helps you stay grounded and connected to a collective purpose. Let that relationship remind you that you’re not alone in this world.
Tell your family and friends that you love them. Do it often……like DAILY! It matters.
Create a daily routine that brings you joy. Don’t be rigid or obsessive about it, but focus on small, consistent habits that support your well-being. Some days will require motivation, and others will require discipline and that’s okay. Just remember: our feelings are real, but they’re not always facts. They’re temporary, and they will pass.
This is something I’ve learned from the dolphins: they never stay stagnant. They’re always moving, flowing with the tides, adapting to their environment. I truly believe that emotional and physical movement is essential for human thriving. Stagnation can create pain, but movement brings healing and growth.
One of the most powerful tools we have is self-awareness. Learn to recognize both pleasant and unpleasant emotions, not to judge them, but to understand what they’re teaching you. Emotions carry energy, and tuning into that energy gives you insight into how to care for yourself and how to show up in the world.
So be loving. Be compassionate. Be kind to everyone, especially yourself. Surround yourself with people who are different from you. Always stay a student. Stay vulnerable. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, fully and unapologetically.
I’ve learned so much from my children, my clients, my friends, strangers, and my elders. Life is one big classroom.
So smile…..a lot. Laugh….a lot. Be silly. Be playful. Be joyful. Never stop connecting with your inner child. Nurture that part of you often as it’s where so much of your magic lives.
