Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Serrato. She and her team share her story with us below.
Please kick things off with some background on the story.
Las hermanas who began the company were raised watching their mother hustle to care for their family. Adriana, the creator, always thought of herself as an artist. I have always had a love for fashion and I kept looking for formal clothing that would represent my culture as well as be flattering for my body. I was unable to find it and that is what drove me to start my clothing line. Gaby, the organizer and hustler half of the company, she keeps to the consciousness entrepreneurship of the company. Her dedication and passion for equality help Xipi~teca move adelante in conscious entrepreneurship. Xipi~teca celebrates the magic in all women of color and all body types by personalizing everything they make. Invoking the spirit of femininity, amor y cultura.
Just like the sisters, Xipi~teca embraces all bodies and is made custom for a personal and positive experience. Our mission is to create a brand that highlights the divine beauty of being a women of color. As well as representing our culture and consciousness entrepreneurship. It’s body inclusive formal wear inspired by our cultura. It is very important to be yourself. There are so many versions and pictures of what the world wants you to be out there. The norm is already set. It is up to you to stay strong and be authentic. The world deserves to hear your voice and your story, and maybe then we can break the cycle of that one-set vision the media continues to aggravate. Xipi~teca moves to stay true to Adriana’s culture and vision. It is very important to be yourself. There are so many versions and pictures of what the world wants you to be out there. The norm is already set. It is up to you to stay strong and be authentic. The world deserves to hear your voice and your story, and maybe then we can break the cycle of that one-set vision the media continues to aggravate.
Has it been a smooth road?
The struggle is being an entrepreneur woman of color and having difficulties with the clothing aspect because it takes money and time to get the sample right. We are made to order which takes longer to make each garment. Although there are still struggles along the way, I am more than happy to share my love of my culture and fashion. I hope one day I can do this full time and have a team of wonder mujeres.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Xipiteca story. Tell us more about the business.
The company started when I was doing a photo series I was working for a photography exhibition. There I found myself as an artist and as a designer. I always had a love for fashion and photography. While I was preparing myself for the shoot I tried on the lace fabric I purchased to see how I wanted the direction to be. There while I was trying it on I had the idea of making it into a Saint Hoodie. And there was where the Xipi~Teca started. I am most proud of the connections I have formed and the love that I receive. It means a lot to get the support that I receive. This company is truly a love letter to all the women of color that have felt left out or underrepresented. I believe the one thing that sets us apart is that we are a formal wear clothing brand. It’s body inclusive formal wear inspired by our cultura.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see this company expanding and collaborating with other women of color. I would love for our clothing line to have a storefront.
