Life & Work with Luigi Gonzalez & Vid Harper of Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luigi Gonzalez & Vid Harper.

Hi Luigi & Vid, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Luigi: I was born and raised in the Philippines and moved here in 2016 to earn my Master’s Degree in Screenwriting.

Vid: I’m an LA native and I also has a degree in Screenwriting. We met in 2019 and got married a year later. Yes, we got married within a year of meeting, but when you know, you know. And, yes, we got married in the middle of the pandemic. We did not have a ceremony; we did it through Microsoft Teams.

Luigi: One of the biggest things we bonded over is our love of pop culture. Vid is someone who grew up on soap operas, and I casually mentioned that there was a groundbreaking gay soap from the Philippines called “My Husband’s Lover.” Before I knew it, he found it on YouTube and started watching. He was instantly hooked. Me, not so much. I’m not a soap guy. However, whenever there were nuances and cultural differences that the subtitles didn’t do justice, I would be there to happily clear things up for him.

Vid: Our friends found all this very entertaining, and Luigi joked that we should do a podcast called “My Husband Loves My Husband’s Lover.” Then the more we though about it, the more we realized what a great idea that was, especially considering we both have a background in the entertainment industry. I have an encyclopedic knowledge of soap operas, and he has extensive knowledge of Filipino culture, including years of experience in the Filipino film industry. So we set up our recording equipment, and now we have a podcast where we recap and dissect the series episode-by-episode, learning about soaps, Filipino culture and queer life along the way.

We’re about to release episode 25 on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Meanwhile on YouTube, our first 7 episodes have been edited with visuals–including cartoon versions of us illustrated by our brother-in-law, Jonathan Rice of Boulder Media–with more episodes coming soon.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Luigi: Overall, it’s been a smooth process. Our chemistry is truly organic. In fact, we’ve been told by some listeners that they tune in for our banter more than the show recaps.

Vid: This podcast is truly a labor of love. But if there were any challenges worth mentioning, it would be finding the right equipment and finding time to write, record and edit on a consistent basis.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Luigi: I’m most known for writing a gay short film entitled “Basaan,” about a closeted young man who runs into his ex during the Basaan festival in the Philippines. My writing seems to be rooted in comedy. No matter what I write, be it fiction, nonfiction or even this podcast, it’s always imbued with humor.

Vid: I have worked as an editor, most notably with LA’s billboard queen, Angelyne, working on her film among other projects. I also wrote and directed my own soap opera, Between Worlds, a short-form drama on Instagram with an audience that has been steadily growing since its premiere last summer. I just recently filmed five new episodes, which will be released in the near future. My niche passions give my projects a unique edge.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Luigi: One day in the 4th grade, I faked a fever and watched HBO all day. That was the day I realized screenwriting was an actual job and knew that was the path for me.

Vid: I’ve been into soap operas for as long as I can remember. When I was 7 years old, my mom surprised me by taking me to a meet-and-greet event for Robin Mattson, who had recently taken over the role of Janet Green on All My Children, one of my favorite soap opera characters to this day.
