Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Clark.
Hi Jacob, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been a creator, I would say my start was as a kid while my older brother CJ was outside riding his bike or playing baseball, I was inside building things with cardboard (snowboards, forts, swords). However, I ultimately played sports 24/7 years round until I was a junior in Highschool and started to think about what I would be doing after Highschool. I decided LA would be the best place rather than my small town in Oregon to take my stab at a profession in the entertainment industry so I worked seven days a week nearly the whole year to save up money and move down two days after graduation. Since being here, I have enrolled in the Los Angeles film school and began working professionally as a cinematographer and director. I can now support myself fully working freelance which is truly a blessing, a reflection of my parent’s hard work and sacrifice to prepare me for the world and my dedication to work every day just like back home to get where I want. At the same time, I am an independent musical artist starting to get traction and make connections through my video work. Which music is ultimately my most burning passion. So I am now out here in Los Angeles with my feet firmly under my making great strides.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I laughed when I read that. However, if it hasn’t been for the obstacles I’ve faced, I would never be prepared for the new inevitable challenges I know will come. The biggest struggle will always be myself, ultimately managing time, stress, health, and creation is a balance that will always need to change and develop; I don’t think I will ever find a perfect balance and if I do, it could only be for a moment in time.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work as a Cinematographer. I specialize in camera and lighting work and I work side by side with the Director and help them achieve the cinematic look they are going for. I love my job with a passion, lighting creates and manipulates mood and it is an art that I have fallen in love with since day one on a film set. This skill has made me unique and leads me to get a lot of work on film, commercial and music video sets. I also work as a director mostly directing short films and music videos which is also a lot of fun. It is also a great leadership challenge and I enjoy working with so many different kinds of people and bringing everyone together to complete a project we can all call ours. On the musical side, I am a rapper/ lyricist. I currently audio engineer my own work and purchase most of my beats from producer friends and connections or the holy grail…. YouTube. I work out of my home studio set up that I am constantly trying to upgrade to reach industry-standard as much as possible in a bedroom.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success for me will be me being able to help people and give back. I know I can’t stop global warming or solve world hunger but I know if I make giving back and helping as many as I can my goal, I will be able to leave an impact. A sure sign of success for me is if I have checks coming in that are going straight into people pockets that need it through foundations and organizations I’ve created to help people even after I have passed. My first goal is to create a scholarship at my Highschool in Oregon for people who want to go for an entertainment business career when I was graduating there were no scholarship options for me and I want to give kids that chance.
