Today we’d like to introduce you to Eline Van Den Storme
Hi Eline, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the power of makeup. As a teenager growing up in northern France, I was captivated by how a simple brushstroke could transform a person, evoke emotions, or tell a story. This early curiosity and admiration for the art of makeup guided me toward a career that is both creative and technical.
After obtaining my baccalaureate, I decided to follow my passion and enrolled in a specialized makeup school in Lille. During two intense years of training, I explored every aspect of the art, from the subtleties of fashion makeup to the radical transformations of special effects. In 2021, I earned my diploma as a professional makeup artist specializing in special effects, a crucial milestone in making my dreams a reality.
My professional journey truly took off in 2022 when I joined the team at Disneyland Paris as a wigmaker and makeup artist. This role allowed me to dive deeper into the world of entertainment and refine my skills in creating fascinating characters. Working at the heart of one of the world’s largest entertainment companies was a unique opportunity, giving me insight into the importance of collaboration and discipline in an environment where imagination comes to life.
In March 2024, seeking to push my limits, I decided to move to Los Angeles to improve my English and integrate more fully into the film and special effects industry.
My current goal is to continue this journey by collaborating with professionals in the makeup, special effects, fashion, and film industries. I constantly strive to perfect my craft while seeking projects that allow me to combine my love for realism and mythology, two influences that continue to fuel my creativity.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road hasn’t always been easy, and it’s been marked by several challenges. One of the biggest obstacles for me has been – and still is – my lack of self-confidence. In such a competitive field like makeup, it’s easy to compare yourself to others and feel inadequate. This doubt is still present, but paradoxically, it’s also what drives me to push myself further. Every project becomes an opportunity not only to improve my skills but also to prove to myself that I can overcome new challenges.
Living with this insecurity has kept me in a constant state of learning and growth. This need to prove to myself that I can do better has helped me never settle and remain open to what I can still learn.
These obstacles, although difficult, have pushed me to go beyond my limits, to better understand my strengths, and most importantly, to fully commit to this career that I’m passionate about. In the end, it’s these challenges that fuel my desire to keep progressing every day.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a professional makeup artist specializing in special effects, with a strong focus on realistic transformations and the exploration of mythological characters. My career has been built on creating makeup that blends aesthetics and technique, whether for projects in the film industry, theater, or the entertainment world. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, mastering complex techniques such as molding, prosthetics, and aging, while maintaining a very detail-oriented approach.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to create highly realistic special effects. I always strive to achieve a level of detail that allows the audience to forget they’re looking at makeup and fully believe in what they see, whether it’s an injury, a fantastic creature, or subtle aging. This pursuit of realism is what drives me every day and is, I believe, what sets my work apart. My creations are often recognized for their precision and meticulousness.
What distinguishes me from other makeup artists is this combination of my focus on realism and my artistic approach. I love playing with textures and materials to bring characters to life while staying true to my artistic vision. I also try to bring a unique touch by drawing inspiration from mythology and ancient stories, which enriches my creations with a narrative dimension that goes beyond mere physical transformation.
Each project is an opportunity for me to push my limits and showcase a new aspect of my work, whether in fashion, special effects, or artistic makeup. This attention to detail and pursuit of authenticity are truly at the heart of my practice.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned in my career so far is that perseverance and constant self-reflection are essential in this field. Makeup, especially special effects, requires not only technical mastery but also the ability to adapt and find creative solutions when things don’t go as planned. It’s rare that everything runs smoothly, and it’s often in those moments that I’ve learned the most by experimenting and finding innovative ways to overcome challenges.
I’ve also learned that doubt is part of the process. My lack of confidence has sometimes made me question my abilities, but I’ve discovered that this doubt can be a powerful motivator. It pushes me to go further, to never rest on my laurels, and to constantly seek improvement. This humility toward the craft is what allows me to grow as an artist and remain open to continuous learning.
Lastly, I’ve realized that success doesn’t rely solely on individual talent but also on collaboration. Working in teams where everyone brings their expertise and energy is crucial to creating something truly exceptional. This has taught me to listen, to be patient, and to appreciate the contributions each person makes to a project.
