Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Kellogg
Hi Dylan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was an 11-year-old kid, I wanted to watch ‘The Exorcist’ (1973), but my mom wouldn’t let me. So instead, I watched every behind-the-scenes video on YouTube I could find. Once I showed my mom what I had been watching, she finally put it on and we watched it together. Seeing Dick Smith work made me wonder about how it was all done, and how I could do it myself. After watching the film, I tried out some basic SFX YouTube tutorials, which only sparked my interest more. That year, my parents bought me my first prosthetic from Scream Team to try out my first real look for Halloween. From 11 years old- 22 years old, I did sfx makeup as a hobby. I didn’t take it seriously full time until January 2023, when I started Cinema Makeup School’s Complete Track program and graduated in August of the same year. Since graduating, I’ve had the opportunity to work in several special effects shops having the chance to help out on various projects and a movie to be released this year.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a pretty tough road, during school, and for a while after graduating, the writers strike was happening. This caused little to no productions to run, which lead to no jobs. Since the strike has ended, production has moved elsewhere out of California due to the rising cost of filming here compared to other states and countries. California also just recently experienced multiple giant fires in January 2025. Among the devastation, people in the industry affected are still rebuilding, and plenty of popular filming locations no longer exist. Hopefully, there are better circumstances in the near future.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a multifaceted SFX artist specializing in mold making, dental prosthetics, silicone running, and sculpting. One of the projects that got my name out there was a silicone decapitated head of myself, which was the my final project I completed in school. What sets me apart from others is the realism I try to achieve in my work, and attention to detail that comes with that.
