Today we’d like to introduce you to Celina Sasso.
Hi Celina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I fell in love with the arts at a young age and wanted to pursue it for as long as I can remember. I’m grateful I had resources living in Las Vegas most of my life, so I got involved in theatre, choir, dance, and everything that had to do with the performing arts. I studied music in school for most of my time there and quickly realized that’s all I wanted to do. As years went by, I focused on making music my career, and eventually, I was able to meet amazing people and fellow musicians I’m lucky to call friends, sing diverse repertoire regularly in wonderful venues, receive calls asking to see If I’m able to perform here or there, and I’m proud to say that music is my full-time job.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. I have to say though, I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for the reassurance from my family and peers. I’m rich in love and emotional support which has helped me get through so much. Until this day, I struggle with imposter syndrome and was recently diagnosed with ADHD. Before diagnoses, I was told I had anxiety and depression, but I feel like my underlying ADHD is what exasperated those symptoms. There have been times where I thought I wouldn’t be able to get through a performance because I sense a panic attack forming or it would actually happen mid-show. After those shows, I’d feel disappointed in myself or felt like I wanted a break. My peers would tell me otherwise or that they didn’t notice which was reliving to hear. I’m always working on better ways to control those feelings and anxiety. With the stress I endure, I lost my spirituality, but I’m currently working to get on that path again so I’m able to control and manage my mental health.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer! I’d say I’m very proud of my range. I worked on my voice and technique for a good 19 years to achieve the sound I have now. Thanks to my long-time vocal coach Heather Kefalas. However, there is still room to progress. I’ve just started 🙂 My goal was to be able to sing anything that is thrown at me, and I only hope I do the songs that I sing justice! I guess what sets me apart from others is versatility when it comes to style and genre. I will say my heart does belong to jazz. I like to sing a variety of music from jazz, theatre, rock, opera, pop, etc. in order to keep it new and fun while staying true to myself. Music is music at the end of the day. It’s a universal language. So, If I can communicate with everyone through song, I will.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’d like to share that regardless of someone’s influence in your field, don’t let them make you feel like you’re less than them. You’re not a reflection of someone else’s insecurity. We’re all here and meant to shine in our own way.
