Life & Work with Bo Mirhosseni

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bo Mirhosseni.

Bo Mirhosseni

Hi Bo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! I was born in Tehran, Iran, and came to Los Angeles at the age of 1. I grew up in Long Beach, California, and there, while in high school, I started making skate videos for local skaters. I then got an opportunity to shoot a music video for a friend of mine who was an up-and-coming hip-hop artist at the time. I’m not sure if he’s still rapping, but that led me to discovering Spike Jonze and realizing that Spike was also doing skate videos and then started making commercials and music videos. Eventually, I made a small commercial for Virgin Mobile, which played at the Golden Lion Cannes Advertising Festival, and I got signed by a production company after that.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road at all. The film business has its highs and lows, but I always told myself I can’t quit, and even when things got really slow, or I had back-to-back rejections, I felt like I need to just focus on the creative and not get tied up in timelines and the things we cannot control.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a writer-director in Los Angeles. I started off doing music videos and commercials along with short films. My debut feature, History of Evil, is coming out February 23 on Shudder streaming platform! I have directed music videos for Kaytranada, Anderson. Paak, Mac Miller, Kehlani, Disclosure, and others. As well as having directed ads for Samsung, Mercedes-Benz, Ray-Ban, Honda, and more. My video for Disclosure did really well, topping the Best Music Videos chart for that year. I’m proud of that one.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I had a few health conditions growing up, so I was indoors more, which I guess led me to being more creative. I’d say as a kid, I was not afraid to talk to people and even strangers, according to my mom. My interests growing up were video games (still are), Los Angeles Lakers, and, of course, watching movies.
