Today we’d like to introduce you to Azizi Donnelly.
Hi Azizi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started acting a little later then some I was 21 when I decided to make this my professional career and really give it all I had. I always had a very strong creative side but I didn’t really know that acting was something you can pursue professionally so for me it was always more of a hobbie until that point. As an Australian actress, I had to learn an American accent so I did that and I threw myself into all kinds of acting classes, at one point I was taking three at one time. After about a year of taking classes full time, my mission was to get a manager and start auditioning. I submitted myself to managers, I did plays and showcases and eventually, I got a meeting with a great manager and I happened to be in a play at the time that they came to see and I got signed to my first manager.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. But every challenge I have had I have grown and something great was always on the other side. Most of my struggles have been learning to handle rejection, building real self-confidence and not being an American citizen working around that… Overall I’m really grateful for these challenges because it has made me the artist that I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actress, model and writer. I used to think that you had to be one thing only and I was ashamed to do more than one thing, now I am proud to do all that I do and I believe the complete opposite of what I used to. Primarily I am an actress, I love performing but I also love storytelling in all different art forms including writing and I have been modeling since I was 17 years old.
I love to take risks, I love a challenge and I love deep passionate work.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see myself having more say in the films and jobs that I do, be able to create but stick to projects that align with who I am as a person and what I believe in.
