Life & Work with Anna Murphy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Murphy.

Anna Murphy

Hi Anna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Originally from Jefferson City, MO, my early years were shaped by a deep involvement in volleyball, a sport I pursued passionately through to a scholarship at Arkansas State University for Division 1 volleyball. While my athletic career was fulfilling, I knew my professional future lay elsewhere. This realization led me to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Radiologic Sciences, specializing in Radiation Therapy, a field that satisfied my desire to contribute positively to others’ lives.

After graduating, my career took me from the rainy environment of Seattle to the sunny landscapes of California. My move to Los Angeles in September 2023 marked a pivotal moment, reigniting my passion for fashion and modeling- a field I’d always been drawn to, thanks in part to my unique height and appearance. The transition was catalyzed by reuniting with my childhood friend, now a photographer, with whom I began building my portfolio. This new chapter in LA is not just a career shift but a personal calling to inspire and advocate for diversity in the modeling industry, leveraging my distinctive traits to champion inclusivity and representation.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey towards modeling in Los Angeles has been anything but smooth, filled with both expected and unforeseen challenges. Transitioning from a professional background in Radiation Therapy to the competitive world of modeling introduced a steep learning curve, particularly in understanding the nuance of the fashion industry and establishing myself as a newcomer in a city known for its high stakes and fierce competition.

The greatest struggles have included adapting to the fast-paced environment of LA, navigating the intricacies of modeling contracts and portfolio building, and balancing my existing career with my aspirations in modeling. Despite these obstacles, my journey has been enriched by the support of my family, friends, and mentors, whose encouragement has been a constant source of strength. Each challenge has served as a lesson in resilience, teaching me the importance of perseverance, authenticity, and the value of a supportive community.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
By profession, I am a Radiation Therapist, a role that allows me to make a tangible difference in the lives of cancer patients through advanced treatment techniques. This career is founded on my commitment to healthcare and a desire to support individuals through their most challenging moments.

Parallel to my healthcare career, I am ardently pursuing a path in modeling, driven by a vision to redefine beauty standards within the industry. My efforts are concentrated on attending industry events, collaborating on photoshoots, and seeking opportunities that align with my values of diversity and inclusion.

What sets me apart is not just my professional versatility but my journey from athlete to healthcare professional and now, to aspiring model. I am most proud of my unwavering dedication to pursuing my passions and the unique perspective I bring to the modeling world- my height, my background, and my commitment to inclusivity. These qualities not only define my work but also my mission to inspire others to embrace their uniqueness and pursue their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they may face.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is making a meaningful impact on the lives of others, whether through my professional work in healthcare or my aspirations in the modeling industry. This core value stems from a deep-seated belief in the power of compassion, empathy, and representation to effect change.

In my career as a Radiation Therapist, the opportunity to support and care for cancer patients during their most vulnerable moments is both a privilege and a profound responsibility. Witnessing the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity reinforces my commitment to this path, emphasizing the importance of empathy and technical expertise in equal measure.

Parallel to my healthcare profession, my pursuit of a career in modeling is driven by a desire to challenge and expand the industry’s perceptions of beauty and representation. Having personally navigated the complexities of embracing my unique physical attributes, I am passionate about advocating for diversity and inclusivity in fashion. This mission goes beyond the aesthetic aspects of modeling; it’s about inspiring confidence and self-acceptance in individuals who may feel marginalized or underrepresented.

Ultimately, what matters most to me is the ability to use my platforms- both in healthcare and modeling- to inspire, uplift, and make a tangible difference. It’s about leaving a legacy of kindness, resilience, and advocacy for inclusivity, reflecting a world where every individual feels seen, valued, and empowered.
