Life & Work with Aly Honoré

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aly Honoré.

Hi Aly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My junior year in undergrad, I decided to make a film called BAMBI. I was in the film program at my school but had yet to really tap into what excited me about production. Up until this script came to life, I almost felt like I didn’t belong in the program. But when I got together with two incredible artist friends, we, in the span of three months, wrote and produced a film to completion that went on to win several honors in Los Angeles’ short film festival circuit. That was definitely the jumping-off point for my career. We were so young and fresh. All of our creative decisions were so ambitious, but we had the resolve to execute them all.

From then on, I sought only producer and director roles in my field. I’ve since worked on many nationwide campaigns as a producer or creative director. But I don’t know if I would’ve had the confidence to pursue this career had it not been for the success of BAMBI. Not success in terms of the awards, but the fulfillment the project brought to all who were involved.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think I can adequately describe in words the rollercoaster of emotions that come along with being an artist at this time. But in short, no. Not a smooth road. However, I will say most of the struggles along the way have been self-imposed. It’s like a one-person sport, and your only opponent is your mind. The self-doubt, the intrusive insecure thoughts, the self-sabotage is all very real for a lot of artists, and I am not exempt. But I am (slowly) learning the power of my own thoughts. That positive self-talk is a muscle that needs to be exercised daily.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I work for as a Producer for a production house that specializes in progressive campaigns. I’ve always gravitated toward work that empowers marginalized communities. Social justice has been a driving force for me from a young age, so I always want to work with folks who make that a top priority as well.

Most recently, I directed a set of Black Voter Mobilization commercials for Priorities USA’s Plan My Ballot campaign. It was such a pleasure to work with an all Black cast and speak truth to power about voting. The scripts were so honest about a Black voter’s disposition toward U.S. government. I’m not here to pander to any community; I think it’s imperative we be honest in all of our work. And this GOTV push felt like an earnest appeal to the Black voters’ of today.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’m all for risk-taking if it feels right. If it’s forced, if it’s not motivated by good faith, that will likely reveal itself. But risk-taking when you are in the pocket, when it makes sense, that can be pivotal.
