Life and Work with Sara Salamon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Salamon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I never picked up a camera until I was in Art School. I started as a Fine Art major with a focus in Intermedia and found that I was immediately drawn to photographing people. I quickly changed my emphasis on Photo and Design. I started out by doing freelance photoshoots for bloggers and various fashion brands. As I continued working with new clients and meeting new people, my photographs started to take shape. I realized, my favorite things to do was to photograph intimate and playful moments. As time went on and my portfolio began to expand, I began shooting couples and friends, and eventually found that weddings and engagements were where I wanted to be. I simply just love photographing love.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I definitely wouldn’t say my path was easy. I bounced from one subject to the next before I found content I absolutely loved. Also, being a creative (especially in LA area) it is highly competitive. There is so much talent out there, it becomes easy to play the game of comparison. That being said, my best piece of advice would be to just absorb as much information as you can. Meet other creatives to bounce ideas off of and learn from, and never compare yourself to others. The best thing that has helped me over the years, I call “creative content overload”. I try to make as much of my time about the shooting, even if it is just exploring new places to shoot in the future or schedule as much as I can to make sure I always have a ton of content to experiment with and learn from.

Please tell us about SaraSol Photography.
I think at this point, my specialty would be photographing love. Whether it is an engagement, wedding or couples that just want fun memories, it is always fun to see how the shoot evolves based off of my subjects’ personalities and interactions. I adore using color and light to capture candid moments and create visually interesting images as well as encapsulating a unique story in each shoot. I think I am most proud of the evolution of my shooting style over the years, and how it continues to evolve with every shoot. I love learning from other creatives with collaborative work, as well as scheduling in various different locations. By finding these new inspirations, I find it very influential in my creative process after shooting.

When I go to edit photos, I edit based off of that particular shoot, whether it be its location, it’s lighting, etc. I think it is very important not to just slap the same present/filter over all of your photos, but rather treat each shoot separately. I find that each color treatment helps tell a story and adds value to each shoot by enhancing its mood. I think by treating each shoot separately, it has definitely helped set me apart.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I definitely find myself reading a ton of wedding blogs. It helps me find inspiration for shooting timelines, new depths of field, and even posing my subjects for a photograph. Junebug Weddings is probably my go to in the blog space. I also LOVE the book called “Business for Bohemians” by Tom Hodgkinson. I highly suggest this book to any freelance creative because it emulates your business as your lifestyle. This book has definitely given my business more of a structure and me more of an understanding of how to continue to grow and develop as a creative.
