Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Tracy Schroeder of Newport Beach

Tracy Schroeder shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Tracy, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
When I was first interviewed by Voyage LA in 2018 I was in the beginning of building an investment company that acquired multi-family buildings., At the same time I was forming Clerel Construction, Inc. to oversee the renovation and improvements at the property level. What the next 7 years had in store for me was a surprise. In 2023 I opened the Phoenix, Arizona branch and expanded to property management in both California and Arizona. Being vertically integrated in two states takes a lot of energy. My days are full; they have become more operational than ever before, but it feels good to build something big.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
The brand evolved from an investment company, acquiring multi-family real estate assets for high-net-worth individuals. At the time we outsourced property management and renovation work. It didn’t take long for me to realize that without strict oversight to control expenses, through responsible property maintenance and property management, an asset manager is swimming upstream. I set out to create a better process, one in which all divisions were working together and rowing in the same direction. Ultimately, the results tell the success story.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Honesty and integrity are everything. The most damaging action a person can do is to lie, cheat, or steal. There is nothing forgivable about dishonesty.

Forgiveness can be given to people’s errors in judgement. When people say or do things out of ignorance, that can break a bond, however if acknowledged that their actions were mis-guided then a bond can be restored.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
When you find out that someone has been dishonest and malicious in actions, they tend to break everything they were responsible to protect and hand it to you in shattered pieces. It is traumatic when trusted people turn out to be far less than trustworthy. The recovery is so much better because it opens your eyes, your knowledge, and builds a strength that no one can ever teach you. The best lesson I ever got from life is “trust but verify.”

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Moral character is everything. You can analyze any company, any religion, any family, any relationship, and the people that have strong moral character succeed. It is the one value that I protect at all costs.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
How hard it was to get there. There were big battles, medium battles, and small battles, and we shouldered the riffle for all of them. There is no shan-gri-la and no fairy tales, just a lot of hard work. Nothing is given and take nothing for granted.

Legacy’s are built by a team, not one person. It is the work of many that bring change and create successful companies. Be thankful for those who are honest, and loyal.
