Rosie Tran shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Rosie, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Yes, this is something I am learning as I get older. Lack of “acting fast” and taking things super slow is a super power. You don’t always need to act fast, and in fact sometimes patience and silence is the best thing to do. I am a very “action oriented” person, but as I get older I notice that there is a subtle difference between acting on information and acting on impulse. You don’t want to be impulsive. You want to make sure you weigh your pros and cons and make the right choice. This is different from over thinking which many of us also do. Over thinking can be toxic and trap you in a cycle of paralysis or questioning yourself and your decisions.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Rosie Tran and I am the host and creator of the new series “Rosie Tran Presents…” which is a 10-episode streaming series available on Amazon Prime and soon on Tubi. It is a show that features diverse comedians and tells their stories through intimate and funny interviews and then showcases their stand up comedy. I tried to feature comedians that are different and that break stereotypes, like I have over my 20+ career as a comedian!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before I was me, I was a very shy and sensitive girl who wanted nothing more than to fit in with the crowd and be accepted. I deeply wanted to belong. I always felt like an “outsider”. As the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants, growing up in Louisiana, I never quite felt I belonged in either culture. What was so painful growing up, is now my super power! I love blending my heritage and I understand why I never “fit in”. I was trying to be like everyone else, when really I was a leader! I am so happy I was a late bloomer and am continuing to blossom!
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering is… awesome! If you don’t waste it ! What does that mean? It means a lot of people go through what I call needless suffering. Something bad happens to them and instead of self reflecting, learning a lesson, or questioning it (purposeful suffering), they blame others, become bitter, or make the same mistake! This is horrible and absolutely NOT the purpose of suffering. Suffering is feedback, and there for you to learn. For example, I was in a terrible relationship and suffering a lot. My former partner was toxic and abusive. Initially, I kept trying to make it work (needless suffering). I thought that if I kept trying to make a broken relationship work, it would work. Don’t get me wrong, a broken relationship CAN be fixed, if both people are willing to fix it, but this ex partner was not willing. That was my feedback. Finally, I left. But I didn’t waste that experience, I took time off from dating and looked at what happened, examined it, and realized so many things about myself. That relationship has turned into a blessing. Even though my ex is still a toxic person and we don’t talk, I felt like he taught me a lot, which I brought into my marriage. I am happily married now, and treat ALL my mistakes and suffering as lessons. Don’t waste your life with needless suffering. Do the HARD work of examining yourself, your role, and what you have learned, and create a life experience from it ! Mistakes truly are blessings – as long as you learn !
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lies the entertainment industry tells you is that you need the gatekeepers! You need someone to just give you a chance. Once I started taking my career into my own hands and making my own luck and chances, things really transformed for me! Even if you have nothing, with the internet, social media, your smartphone, you can make your own projects now. You don’t need anyone to create your own luck and chances now! That doesn’t mean you treat people as disposable. It just means you find your team and create now without the big studios or corporations backing you, and they come to you !
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Everything ! I only play “long term games”. I always invest in myself and look at things for the long term. My show “Rosie Tran Presents…” is in season 1. I hope to make ten seasons! Or more ! I never do something for the short term. My horizon is (and has always been) long.
