Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Cat Sherwin of Los Angeles

Cat Sherwin shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Cat, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I have quite a few morning rituals that really set me up for the day. Depending on how much time I have and how early I have to be at work depends how long I spend on certain things.
Making a coffee and putting on some calming uplifting music and lighting a couple of candles is one of the first things I do upon getting up. I always do a quick scan of my e mails and messages, to see if there are any urgent responses needed. If I have time will exercise – I like to mix it up so will do a combination of, or interchange of spin, strength training and or yoga. Then I meditate, which is a really important to me. Sometimes I incorporate breathwork. Then I take a shower and get ready for my day – listening to some uplifting music.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Cat Sherwin, I’m an English Australian Makeup Artist, Hairstylist and Groomer working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles.  With over 20 years experience in my craft, I have worked consistently on advertising & commercials, publicity junkets, promos, red carpet events, television, corporate events & conferences, music videos, infomercials, editorial and e-commerce for much of my career. I’ve always been pretty social media shy but started making social media videos on the inside out of beauty on a side spin off of my main Instagram account – it’s @insideoutwith cat. I keep my main IG handle for my artist work. The main focus of my work is to help people feel great inside out. I am also a certified Usui Holy Fire Reiki Master.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I was age 12 in a school play, and I went completely off script with my character, and created a brief comedy moment. The audience loved it and were all laughing so hard. The drama teacher, quite rightly, was angry. But it was so popular it was kept and incorporated into the remaining performances. I had a very blah background character before, who was very dull and vanilla, and I made him into something funny and interesting to the audience. It was completely wrong of me (and actually a bit out of character at the time), and I would not do it again because it could have really let the team down badly.
But it showed me the power of making people laugh on a stage and how creating that moment lifted up the energy in the room.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Trust yourself and believe in yourself. You are more powerful than you can ever imagine – try not to fear the unknown and taking leaps of faith, as it will hold you back. Don’t ever be scared of screwing up, because it’s how you learn. Sometimes some of the best things in life can grow from the catalyst of something very difficult or painful. Always choose what brings your heart joy. I love you.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Kindness, integrity, health and wellbeing, being connected, grounded and calm, nature, freedom, travel, love friendship and family.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Worrying about things out of my control. In fact worrying about anything. Someone once said to me worrying is praying for what you do not want.
