We recently had the chance to connect with Bevin Hamilton and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Bevin, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Have you stood up for someone when it cost you something?
I love this question. The answer is two-fold. Firstly, I feel like often in my life as a creative standing up for MYSELF has cost me relationships, family, security, and often my sense of home. As an artist there will be many champions of you and there will also be many who stand in your way, or even try to impede your progress – that said these thorns in your path are meant to forge you into the artist you are meant to be and to remind you to stand in your power. Secondly, I feel like standing up for human rights in these perilous times has cost me some sanity, but the fight towards human flourishing is absolutely worth it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Bevin and I am a Singer, Songwriter and Actress based in Los Angeles. I believe that every person has a story to tell and that art has the power to change hearts and minds. Art is absolutely crucial to the understanding and betterment of the human condition and to the expansion of emotional intelligence. I am currently in the studio writing and recording my first full length record that has been a long time in the making. I am excited to have a piece that can be listened to all the way through from the first to last track and to have in a sense the opportunity to create a novel out of individual stories (songs).
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I first sung on a stage. I realized that I felt at peace when I was singing and empowered when I sang for others. My journey has had many challenges but every time I come back to my voice I remember who I am and who I aspire to be.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. I would say that every artist feels this way at one point or another. However, ultimately when you are connected and grounded to your inner knowing you can drown out the voices of others telling you who you should be.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Without getting into specifics (because there are far too many to name) I admire the female philosophers, writers, artists, mothers, revolutionaries, visionaries, and carers that came before me. In difficult times, I remember that women were in an even more difficult position than I am, that they were far less privileged and had far less resources and yet they survived and thrived despite their circumstances. I am forever in awe and humbled by them and it reminds me to keep pushing forward and to have immense gratitude for this precious existence.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I am doing what I was absolutely born to do – sometimes that means being ahead of your time and that you may be misunderstood. I believe that sentiment is pretty universal among creatives. Many artists were told growing up to become doctors, lawyers, – go to business school, or told they had no talent, but people deserve to live their truth and follow their dreams. My advice is to always follow your heart because that will always put you on the right path.
