Today we’d like to introduce you to Satomi Matsumoto.
Hi Satomi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The creation of ANGELEEP, a Japanese-style dry head spa, was born from my lifelong desire to heal others. Since childhood, I have been highly sensitive to my surroundings and the emotions of others. For a long time, I struggled with stress-induced insomnia, chronic muscle tension, fatigue, and panic disorder. Discovering that these challenges were due to being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) was a major turning point. It inspired me to find ways to support the one in five people who share this sensitive trait.
While staying in Japan for an extended period to care for my father, I sought relief at a dry head spa. For the first time, I experienced a profound sense of recovery—drifting into a restful sleep and waking up with both my mind and body feeling completely refreshed. I felt certain that this magical technique, developed by a registered nurse based on physiology and anatomy, had the power to heal many people. I trained at a specialized school and gained practical experience working in a salon in Japan.
When my father recovered and I returned to Los Angeles, I opened ANGELEEP with the concept of being a “Head Aid Station”—a resting place for the hard-working mind. If life is a marathon, having a “Head Aid Station” allows you to run more comfortably and achieve even better results. (By the way, I’m actually a Honolulu Marathon finisher myself—though please don’t ask about my time! (lol)) I am incredibly grateful to have many regular clients who visit us monthly, weekly, or sometimes even two days in a row! I am truly happy that ANGELEEP has become a vital “Head Aid Station” in their lives. Seeing my clients find peace during a session is the greatest healing for me as a therapist. It is my true calling and my life’s passion. My goal is to remain an active “grandma head therapist” for the rest of my life!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Obtaining my California state license was particularly difficult, as I had to pass a rigorous written exam filled with complex technical terminology. Today, I view that license as my “ticket” to fulfilling a divine mission. While I am still navigating the daily task of introducing this relatively new service to a wider audience, every “Amazing!” I receive from a client fuels my heart. My dream is to continue spreading this healing touch, step by step, with the hope that one day, “Head Aid Stations” will be found all across the United States.
As you know, we’re big fans of Japanese Dry Head Spa ANGELEEP. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
ANGELEEP specializes in a unique Japanese dry head massage technique that uses no water or oil. This allows us to precisely target and release tension in the intricate muscles of the head, face, neck, shoulders, and ears. Based on physiology and anatomy, our method is designed to alleviate stress, headaches, insomnia, eye strain, and neck/shoulder stiffness, leading to high-quality sleep and deep physical recovery. Beyond relaxation, the stimulation of the scalp promotes blood circulation, which offers beauty benefits such as natural face-lifting, anti-aging, and improved hair health.
What sets us apart is the profound sense of peace our clients experience. I named my studio ANGELEEP because I was so moved by how every client—no matter how stressed they were—eventually falls into a sleep as serene as an angel. It’s a combination of “Angel” and “Sleep.”
Our services start with a 60-minute session covering the head, ears, neck, shoulders, and chest. For those seeking deeper rejuvenation, our 75-minute and 90-minute courses also include specialized massage for the face and arms. I want our readers to know that ANGELEEP is more than just a head massage; it is a “Head Aid Station” dedicated to restoring your vitality so you can face the world feeling refreshed and light.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was deeply moved by beautiful things and joyful moments, but at the same time, I was very sensitive and easily hurt. I often found group activities and structured school environments overwhelming. I preferred quiet, creative spaces where I could express myself freely. I loved drawing and writing imaginative stories, and I kept a diary every single day. Writing became my safe place — a way to process my emotions and make sense of the world around me.
When I first moved to the United States about 20 years ago, I started a blog as a modern-day diary. I wanted to leave proof that I had lived, and I also hoped to deepen understanding about panic disorder, which I had struggled with. I never imagined that this blog would eventually lead clients and even future team members into my life.
One of the team members who works with me today originally came to me as a client through that blog. We discovered that we shared similar sensitivities and a common desire to heal others. Meeting such precious partners who truly understand this temperament feels like destiny to me.
Through dry head spa, I of course want to heal those who are exhausted. At the same time, equally important to me, I hope to offer sensitive souls — those who sometimes feel it is hard to live in this world — the profound happiness of “healing oneself by healing others.”
That is why I also offer a 3-day dry head spa certification course. Students have come from Hawaii, Canada, San Francisco, and Orange County. Teaching this technique brings me double joy: seeing more people receive healing, and seeing more therapists discover fulfillment by healing others while being healed themselves.
Finding a profession where I can embrace my sensitivity has transformed something that once caused me so much pain into something I am now proud of. Today, I truly feel the joy and meaning of being alive.
