Inspiring Conversations with Mike Rose of MTR Construction

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Rose.

Mike Rose

Hi Mike, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a kid, I was always fascinated with building things. I would always take things apart and putting them back together again just to learn how they were made. My desire for learning the science behind building grew as I got older and I realized I wanted to pursue a life in the construction world. I started working as a laborer and quickly moved up the ranks. I became a foreman, then superintendent and at last promoted to a Project Manager. After working many years working with home builders and some of the largest developers in the US, I decided it was his time for me to make something for myself.

In 2007, I got my General Contractors License and MTR Construction Inc was formed. I didn’t stop there, I later earned specialty licenses in concrete (C-8) and electrical (C-10). Since its inception, the company has been hard at work to become a respected name in the industry. In 2016, I was connected with HGTV, and first premiered on House Hunters Renovations then Christina on The Coast. Today, the company has grown to have different divisions which include: MTR Construction, MTR Designs, MTR Consulting and MTR Developments. The company still focuses on the same goal that drove me to pursue my dream.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m not sure if I would say it’s been a smooth ride. When I first started, I did all the work myself and getting new clients wasn’t easy. I also started my company during the housing crash in 2007. I didn’t have money to advertise so I called up my grandmother and asked her if I could remodel her kitchen. I knew I needed a portfolio to show people what I could do. When I got done with her kitchen, she was so happy she told all her friends at the hospital about me. At the time, she was volunteering at St Joseph Hospital and her job was to help show people around. She was a huge supporter of mine. It wasn’t long before I started getting calls from people at the hospital to do work for them. For the next three years, I worked seven days a week just to pay bills. It was hard; I was learning the business side of things and trying to grow the business. I remember paying my employees and not having any money left over for myself but I knew if I put in the time and effort it would pay off.

We’ve been impressed with MTR Construction, Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
MTR Construction is a home builder and remodeling company. MTR Construction is a design-build company. One of the major things that set us apart from other home remodeling companies is our reputation. The clients are always the priority for us.

We are a one-stop shop for clients; we will help people from the very beginning on the planning stage all the way to the finish line. We handle architectural design plans in-house, so we can have quicker turnaround times and help budget projects correctly from the start. I like to educate homeowners about the process so they know what to expect. It sets a level of expectation and helps make the project run better.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I feel luck has played a part in my business for sure. When I started my business, it was during the recession, so I was able to find equipment cheap. That allowed me to grow my business quicker without going into more debt.
