Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Demirjian.
Hi Mary, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been practicing Optometry since 2009. I started my first practice in the San Fernando Valley a couple of months after graduating. I started my second practice in 2017 in Palmdale, CA. My newest practice is located in Santa Clarita. I opened in January 2023. I decided to do a mixed-concept practice with the third location. I have a full coffee bar/cafe incorporated into my Optometric practice. It is called Wide Eye Optometry and WE (Wide Eye) Lounge. I have always wanted to own a coffee shop and I wanted to put a different spin on my Optometry practice. It has been so amazing so far.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Each practice build-out came with its struggles. The most challenging was the third location. Due to the mixed concept, it was difficult to get all the permits and inspections in a timely manner. COVID definitely slowed us down as the buildout began in late 2021. We finally were able to open January 2023!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Wide Eye Optometry?
I am a full-scope Optometrist. I specialize in family practice, specialty contact lenses, Glaucoma management, myopia management, and dry eye treatments. I am proud to offer vision care to patients in the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, and Antelope Valley. I offer alternative treatments for dry eye. I also have a wide selection of frames from leading designers in my optical dispensaries.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I joined the local sector of the California Optometric Association immediately after graduation. This is where I found many mentors that helped me along my career path. I have served membership chair, vice president, and president on the board. I am currently serving as the secretary for the San Fernando Valley Optometric Society. This has allowed me to meet many colleagues across the state.
