Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynette Chiabai
Lynette, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Raised in an immigrant family, I was taught the importance of hard work and strong morals early on. My youth in the Philippines was brimming with dreams of America, a place where anything seemed possible. Upon immigrating, I saw my parents’ determination and adaptability as they worked hard to provide for my brother and me in this new world. In our culture, family ties are cherished, and I was blessed to have my parent’s unconditional love. Bravely moving to Los Angeles on my own for college, my mom’s words of wisdom to study hard resonated with me. I balanced multiple jobs to support my studies. After graduating, I joined a startup company, learning the intricacies of natural gas trading and contributing to its success for 15 years before moving to a utility company. In Southern California, my husband and I raised our children until they set off for college, prompting me to ponder my future endeavors. For years, I wondered what that might be, until one Sunday morning, as I was reading the LA Times, I came across an article about the CEO of Hammer & Nails Grooming Shop for Guys. The concept of owning a men’s grooming lounge intrigued me, particularly because there was nothing like it in the Southbay. The men’s self-care industry was flourishing, and I was aware of its rapid growth. In 2019, I seized the opportunity and acquired the franchise, juggling it with my corporate job. During the pandemic, I handled both roles, but by 2022, seeing the potential in my business, I chose to leave my corporate position to dedicate myself to my entrepreneurial endeavor.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Embarking on an entrepreneurial venture is both exciting and demanding. Just after launching my business in November 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic struck. We had to adapt quickly, striving to remain open as much as we could, we operated outdoors in compliance with Covid-19 regulations to maintain some income. As the pandemic began to wane, we faced hiring difficulties stemming from persistent concerns. The pandemic certainly impacted us, changing our anticipated trajectory towards profitability. I consider these challenges a fundamental part of the entrepreneurial experience; each obstacle is a chance to learn, whether it’s about improving business operations or becoming a more effective leader.
Nevertheless, thanks to hard work, perseverance, and support from my husband, customers and community, our business is now thriving.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Where should I start? I was raised in a small town in the Philippines, marked by its dirt roads, towering trees, and a nearby expansive river. I recall the single market that catered to the entire town. My grandparents were devoted to rearing pigs and chickens. as well as kept a garden of vegetables. I often visited the river with my Dad, where I mastered swimming. My childhood brims with vibrant recollections: playing marbles on the ground, climbing trees, and engaging in hide and seek among the cornstalks. Reflecting on those days, my youth was rich with outdoor adventures, cherished moments with family and friends, and the simplicity of a small town untouched by modern technology and vehicles.
