Inspiring Conversations with Joseph Yang of AcuFather Acupuncture and Herbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Yang.

Hi Joseph, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After completing my PhD in neuropsychiatry, I came to the United States to start my clinical practice. At first, I had to overcome the language barrier. But anyway, when I started serving patients, all the traditional medicine methods were very effective and I was very happy with the results achieved. Soon, I will focus more on the mental health profession, because this is my main interest for a long time.
My practice includes home services, helping patients who cannot leave their homes, visiting local nursing homes, in addition to the traditional medicine school clinic and my private practice, which keeps me very busy every day. I remember that I had many patients with various pains, and also many patients related to certain mental illnesses, such as anxiety, stress reactions, chronic depression, insomnia, some kind of mental fatigue, memory or concentration problems, etc. In the early 2000s, I wrote a 100-page notebook for school teaching, communication with other practitioners, and my studies. Then this notebook is the basis for all my books, a series of 4 books on mental health treatment in traditional Cheese medicine, which was finally published in 2019.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When treating patients with physical problems, it is easy for doctors to forget to observe and understand the emotional and psychological conditions of patients, but in fact, every patient is a combination of spiritual, psychological and physiological. With my educational background and practical experience, I know that I cannot miss this kind of information. Even if the patients you treat have physical problems and no obvious psychological problems, you must understand them psychologically and emotionally to help them overcome the pain of the disease. In fact, when you pay attention to the psychological and emotional aspects of the patient, you will soon find that the relationship between you and the patient can be very close. Doctors and patients will also understand each other better. In this process, you can easily discover many details. Usually, even if the patient will not tell you or they don’t know how to tell you, only when you pay attention to the patient’s psychology and emotions can you get more detailed information and make your treatment more effective.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Now, I still treat many patients with various medical conditions, but I have made some changes in my clinic. I will not try to schedule everything together and keep myself busy so as not to affect the treatment effect. Instead, I will try to slow down the pace and complete it in a timely manner. I hope to serve my patients at a slower pace and pay more attention to each patient mentally and emotionally, so that each patient can receive high-quality treatment. In addition, my acupuncture style has also changed, more based on efficiency-based treatment techniques rather than the number of needles, which makes it easier for patients to accept the acupuncture techniques without any needle reactions.
I have my own line of herbal formulas that cover major clinical problems, some of which are for treating multiple mental disorders. For more than 30 years, my clients have loved my herbal formulas, which are designed based on my personal experience. I also use herbal teas to provide this personalized treatment plan for my patients. In addition, Traditional Chinese Medicine has a psychological treatment technique that I use every day in the clinic to help patients deal with their psychological problems, called “changing mental energy patterns”, which is very helpful. In addition, I also provide suggestions for lifestyle changes and discuss it with patients to help them recover faster.

How do you think about luck?
If I were to talk about the role of luck, I don’t think I’m very lucky. As a medical practitioner engaged in traditional medicine, the most important thing is that you must think about the patients with the whole heart, as a word “wholehearted” means. If you think about the patients wholeheartedly, you will see results and it will be easy to achieve good results in your work. If your heart is not in it, you will lose your concentration, your attention will be diverted from your most important goal at the moment, and you will eventually become a loser and ultimately fail to achieve any clinical success. Therefore, as a medical practitioner, I must pay attention to myself and always connect my heart with the patients. My clinical motto is “passion and professionalism”, and I will never forget this. Otherwise, my failure does not come from the outside world, but from my own heart, so I must pay attention to this.
