Inspiring Conversations with Jason Mac of CrossFit Echo Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Mac.

Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Fitness has always been a really big part of my life. When I was young, I was a big tennis player and spent all my days on the tennis courts. I just remember that being active was just what I wanted to do. And I love fitness because it is one of the few things in this world that you truly have to earn. And you do it through time and sweat. I moved to Los Angeles in 2013 and the first gym I walked into was CrossFit Sunset at the time. And I never left. We went through a few name and personnel changes. And in 2020 I officially took over as Head Coach. And it has been amazing to grow with our team of Coaches and our awesome community. I can wholeheartedly say that I think we are the best version we have ever been. And I’m excited to always push us to be better and better.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think there is such a thing as a smooth road! I took over as Head Coach in Jan of 2020. Yup…that means 2 months later the city(and pretty much the world) shut down. Literally, we could not have in-person classes. Which is what we hang our hats on. We are a gym built on interaction with each person. We did Zoom workouts for a while and I must say…our community was amazing during this time. When we finally could meet again, we still couldn’t work out inside. The folks over at Leo’s Car Stereo were amazing enough to work out a deal for us to use their small parking lot before 10am and after 6pm every day. So we hauled 1600 pounds of gym mats over there twice a day. Along with any other equipment we were using. And we worked out! We got sweaty and dirty, but we saw our members were so thankful and how it helped to make their day a little better.

And after a few months of doing that, we started to grow. More people would stop by and wanted to join classes! We learned a lot about ourselves and our business through that experience and made our service and business better because of it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a local gym in Echo Park. We offer Coach led group classes, Nutrition Coaching, and Personal Training. Our main objective is to offer a welcoming and inclusive environment where anyone can pursue their fitness goals. We are Coaches who want to Coach. We believe that there is a correct way to move our bodies and we are going to use our experience and knowledge to guide anyone who walks into our doors.

In today’s culture, I feel like fitness and health can get so complicated and there are so many trends and paths. And there are many ways to reach a goal. My goal is to break it down as simple as we can. And what I’ve found in over a decade of coaching and lots of athletes(we are all athletes!)…is three simple keys to success.

The 3 Keys to Success:

CONSISTENCY

You have to walk through the door. You have to show up. No matter what, you will not see the physical and mental changes you want if you do not walk in the door. This past summer I had a new member ask me, “The people that don’t succeed, why?” Which is a really simple question…but in 10 years, I’ve never been asked in that way. After thinking a moment the answer was simple…”They didn’t show up.” It had nothing to do with athletic background. Or their athleticism or potential. You have to show up consistently week after week.

LISTEN(Learn)

You have to listen to your Coaches. I’m fully aware that there are much cheaper places to go and workout. And there are much cheaper places to get daily workout programs. But in my opinion, you don’t come here because of the facility or the programming…you come for the Coaches. Because you don’t want to do this fitness thing alone. And every day we are invested in each person that walks through the door. We want you to ask us questions. We want you to tell us when something doesn’t feel right. But then we want you to listen. You’ll move better. You’ll get stronger. You’ll get fitter.

HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE

You’ve got to try your best. And if you do that, you will win. I hate to break it to anyone who doesn’t know this…nobody wants to be around a black cloud-covered negative sour patch kid all day. Come into the gym with the perspective that you get an opportunity to improve. Sometimes I’ll see folks and they are hanging their head “I’m not good at (insert any movement here)”. Well of course not! You’ve only done it 3 times in your life. Enjoy the process. Embrace the journey and when you look back you’ll see how far you traveled.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been a pretty happy kid. I tend to enjoy challenges. My sport of choice was tennis and I had dreams of being a pro tennis player. But the truth is…and it’s tough to cross that bridge. But about my junior year in high school, I came to the realization that I just wasn’t good enough. Which is tough. But that’s the nature of sports and a lot of physical endeavors. Not everyone can be Roger Federer. But I’ve always been all or nothing. If I see something that I want to go after…I go after it.
