Inspiring Conversations with Janie Glassmith of Spaces Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janie Glassmith

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey to Spaces Wellness began with my group therapy practice in Highland Park, established in 2018. Located in a charming old house on Figueroa, we quickly recognized the value of community connection. We launched ‘Healers Hang,’ regular networking events designed to foster collaboration among diverse healing practitioners, ensuring our clients received truly holistic care beyond psychotherapy.

The success of these events and the opportunity to reclaim my original therapy office in our building sparked the vision for Spaces Wellness. We envisioned a space where trauma-sensitive and consent-oriented healing professionals could collaborate, offering clients a comprehensive wellness experience. Imagine accessing pelvic floor therapy before a trauma session or enjoying a massage after addressing anxiety.

Spaces Wellness is a testament to the power of community. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have partners who have embraced and expanded upon my vision, allowing us to continuously evolve and serve the Highland Park and Northeast Los Angeles community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the primary roadblocks we’ve encountered has been the careful curation of our practitioners. We’re deeply committed to ensuring every professional at Spaces Wellness aligns with our mission of trauma-informed and consent-driven care. This isn’t just a preference; it’s a foundational principle for building trust with our clients.

Naturally, this commitment has meant a longer search and more selective process when bringing in new practitioners and collaborators. While it might limit our immediate growth, we firmly believe that prioritizing quality and ethical practice over speed is essential. We’ve learned that building a truly trustworthy and supportive environment requires patience and a steadfast dedication to our core values. It’s an ongoing process, but one that ultimately strengthens the integrity of Spaces Wellness and benefits our community.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Spaces Wellness is more than just a wellness studio; it’s a curated hub for holistic healing, built on the principles of trauma-informed and consent-driven care. We provide a warm and thoughtful space where individuals can access a diverse range of services and events dedicated to holistic care. The space is also quite literally comfortable because of Suay cushions throughout the studio.

Because our sister business is a therapy practice (Spaces Therapy)- we meticulously select practitioners who align with our mission, ensuring every service offered reflects our dedication to creating a safe and supportive environment. We specialize in providing a comprehensive approach to wellness, offering services such as pelvic floor therapy, massage therapy (including prenatal and postpartum massage), reiki, sound bath and meditation classes, and specialized meetups for motherhood, fatherhood, and queer parenting. We also thoughtfully curate events that provide wellness education and foster genuine connection.

Brand-wise, we’re most proud of the sense of trust and community we’ve cultivated. We’ve created a space where people feel safe to explore their vulnerabilities and embark on their healing journeys. We want your readers to know that Spaces Wellness is a place where they can find curated, holistic care and events that are rooted in integrity, compassion, and genuine connection. We are a resource for Highland Park and the Northeast Los Angeles community to look to for trusted and effective wellness experiences.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Because Spaces Wellness and Spaces Therapy both have such a focus on community, it would likely be surprising for most people to learn that I lean introverted! My work continually highlights the necessity of connection and I’ve seen the fruit of that in my clients and community. So, my team and I are always looking for new ways to create opportunity for connection via groups and events (or even a bi-annual market with our business neighbors The Fig Leaf Tattoo!). And when that group or event is over, I need LOTS of silence and alone time before I’m ready for the next community connection time!
