Inspiring Conversations with Dr. Deborah Villanueva of Healing Mynds, Inc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Deborah Villanueva

Hi Dr. Deborah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My career has been dedicated to advancing mental health programming and advocating for underserved communities. I’ve had the privilege of leading initiatives for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and the Orange County Health Care Agency, where I’ve designed and implemented culturally attuned programs that address the needs of underrepresented and marginalized populations. These efforts focus on empowering families, improving access to care, and fostering resilience within communities often overlooked by traditional systems.

In March, I was deeply honored to be recognized as Woman of the Year in Health by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Commission for Women. This recognition was a testament to my work advocating for equitable policies and services, particularly for those most vulnerable in our society. As a strong ally to the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve also played a leadership role in supporting the development of gender-affirming services for LA County, helping ensure individuals receive compassionate, affirming care.

Beyond my professional contributions, I hold leadership roles within my place of worship and cultural organizations, where I work to foster inclusivity and connection. At the heart of everything I do is a commitment to equity, compassion, and the belief that systemic change is possible when we center the voices of those most affected.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to where I am today has been anything but smooth. As a woman navigating systems and spaces that often amplify male dominance, I’ve faced cultural and societal barriers that made earning a seat at the table a challenge. Early in my career, I quickly learned that being heard- let alone respected- required not only dedication but also a clear vision of the value I could bring to the communities I serve.

One of the greatest challenges has been working within structures that were not always designed to prioritize equity or inclusion. Whether advocating for marginalized populations or championing gender-affirming care, I’ve had to push against resistance rooted in outdated norms. It wasn’t easy, but I’ve remained committed to ensuring that underrepresented voices are not just heard but valued in decision-making processes.

Through persistence, collaboration, and a deep belief in the importance of service, I’ve been able to break through these barriers. Each struggle has only strengthened my resolve to advocate for those who face systemic inequalities daily. I’ve come to see these challenges not as obstacles, but as opportunities to create meaningful change- both for myself and for the communities I am privileged to serve.

We’ve been impressed with Healing Mynds, Inc, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My work focuses on empowering individuals, families, and communities through mental health programming, advocacy, and clinical care. As a mental health therapist and leader in the social work field, I specialize in creating culturally attuned, evidence-based programs that address the unique needs of underserved populations, including children, families, and the LGBTQ+ community.

In my clinical practice, I provide treatment for anxiety and depression disorders, PTSD, and other trauma-related conditions. I have extensive experience supporting survivors of human and sex trafficking- children, youth, and adults- helping them rebuild their lives with dignity, safety, and resilience. My work emphasizes holistic, client-centered care that incorporates each individual’s cultural and personal experiences into strategies for healing and long-term well-being.

What sets my practice apart is the combination of clinical expertise, advocacy, and systemic change. I’ve been privileged to lead programs for agencies such as the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and the Orange County Health Care Agency, breaking down barriers to care and ensuring that the most vulnerable populations have access to resources that affirm their dignity and worth.

At the heart of my work is a commitment to providing compassionate care and empowering individuals and communities to heal, grow, and thrive.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a happy, curious, and compassionate child. My parents and grandparents often shared how intuitive and insightful I was, even at a very young age. I’ve always felt a deep inclination to be of service, whether it was helping my peers excel or celebrating their achievements as if they were my own. Encouraging others and fostering a sense of togetherness felt like a natural extension of who I was.

I was drawn to the wonders of the natural world- whether exploring the ocean, walking through the forest, or thinking about how climate change impacts our planet. Books, art, and travel captured my imagination early on, and I developed a lifelong love for learning and higher education.

Perhaps most of all, I was fascinated by human behavior. I wanted to understand what drives people, what connects us, and how we can create spaces for belonging and shared growth. Looking back, those childhood interests and traits shaped the person I’ve become and continue to inspire the work I do today.
