Inspiring Conversations with Charmaia Williams of Girly World Cosmetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charmaia Williams

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up I was a girly girl, loved makeup and knew I wanted to have a business of my own, but didn’t know where to start. As a minority growing up in LA resources such as starting a business aren’t always easily attainable to minorities like me. Likewise, my mom and dad taught me the key to success was going to college and moving up the ladder in the corporate industry because this is all they knew. They also didn’t know how to start a business or didn’t have any knowledge or resources on how to start one. So, I put my dreams aside and took their advice; graduated college and entered the corporate world. Although it lead me to success, I was never fully happy, I felt like I hadn’t yet found my purpose in life. When covid-19 happened, although it was a mass tragedy and I send my deepest condolences to everyone who lost their precious lives, It provided me with hope. I was laid off in 2020 due to the uncertainty of the pandemic and I was devastated. This was the first time in my career I was let go. However, I took this as a sign to revisit my thoughts of opening the business I always dreamed of. However, I was overwhelmed not knowing where to start, but, I did start! This is sometimes the hardest part of any dream is to stop overthinking, stop putting your dreams off, and starting! Although I was terrified not knowing where this business venture would lead me, I conducted tons of research on the legal formality of starting a business, marketing, products and here I am today and my cosmetics business Girly World is still operating going on 5 years strong. Girly World is not nearly where I want it to be as we are constantly growing and evolving, but I am so proud to have made it this far and feel extremely blessed that I found my purpose in life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running a business definitely has it challenges, it has not been a smooth road, but nothing in life is going to be perfect, I feel like challenges and overcoming those challenges makes life and business so much more beautiful. With starting Girly World it has been a huge investment. An investment of time, resources, and also revenue. Sometimes it can be discouraging when you invest money into marketing or into a product and you don’t see a huge return on your investment. However, the biggest lesson I’ve learned throughout my journey is to never give up and keep trying. Within running a business it’s trial and error. Figuring out what works and what doesn’t and also taking risks. There is no reward without taking risks, but I’ve learned to embrace any challenge that comes along and knowing and having faith that there is nothing I can’t overcome.

We’ve been impressed with Girly World Cosmetics, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Girly World is a makeup brand that was started in 2020. We provide a variety of makeup products including eyelashes, eyeshadows, makeup brushes, lip kits, etc. Our goal behind our brand is to make every girl feel beautiful and empowered through girly beauty, fashion, and vibrant makeup.

Although there are many many makeup brands in the beauty industry, what sets us apart from other brands is our constant obsession for innovation. We strive to provide products that no other brand has or has thought of. For example, we were very fortunate to hop on the new 90’s nostalgia trend early. I personally started wearing what is today know as the “90’s Lip Combo” and alot of people would complement me on my lip combo and it sparked, let me incorporate this into my brand. Hence our best-selling 90’s Lip Kit was born, which includes a lip liner and a lip gloss (varying in multiple shades) This changed the game for us and took our business to another level and something I was very proud of. Before running this business I never knew I had such a creative side to myself, as a CEO & Founder, I currently lead all product designs and even with the growth of Girly World this is an aspect of the business I feel that I will always want to lead because I’ve grown to love it so much.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
With the growth of Girly World, my dreams in the next 5-10 years is to have a larger presence. Our goal is to become a house hold name and to have our products in major retail stores. This will definitely take us to new heights!
