Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Huang.
Hi Anna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a clinical psychologist that has a therapy practice in the Orange County area, and I specialize in working with Asian Americans. I started The Mindful Peach with my husband because I felt like there was a gap in mental health resources for immigrant and Asian American families. I wrote some children’s books that help teach emotions to children (and parents!) by guiding the reader through practical coping skills in an engaging, relatable story. I also created multiple bilingual versions of each book so that multiple generations of families can enjoy these stories together.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting our own business has been exciting and stressful. My husband and I have learned so much along the way about the self-publishing world, talking with vendors, printing large orders, and handling the logistics of a warehouse and storing inventory of product. We found that it is difficult to make profit when you work with major resellers like Amazon or in traditional bookstores. We have also found it difficult to balance running our business and taking care of ourselves in the busy season of life we are in (with 2 little children at home!) However, we are proud of the work we are doing and love receiving feedback from families that our books are making a difference in their lives.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
As a clinical psychologist, I constantly remind myself and others that “your feelings matter.” I grew up in an Asian-American household and wasn’t taught about emotions and coping skills. Building an emotional vocabulary is something I had to do on my own – through my academic studies and my own personal therapy journey. My belief in the importance of emotions is the cornerstone of my clinical work and the reason why I built The Mindful Peach. I hope the books I write can also help others learn that their feelings matter. I am so proud of the children’s books that I have written because they are engaging, colorful, fun, and effective in modeling and showing both parents and children that feelings are normal and there are practical ways to regulate ourselves through tough feelings.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Our mission – to build emotionally healthy families – is what drives our brand and everything that we do. If I think about all the hard parts of owning a small business, I get overwhelmed and paralyzed by indecision. But when I lean into how much I believe in the importance of communication and emotional wellness in families, then I’m able to keep taking steps in building this business.
