Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Morley.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started teaching yoga in 1998 at health clubs and gyms throughout the greater Los Angeles area then established a strong private celebrity practice that still continues today, along with a wellness yoga retreat company called Global Tribe Retreats where over the past 23 years we have done close to 70 retreats worldwide. It was in early 2020 when the pandemic hit that we switched our platform from studio yoga to online yoga. It took off like wildfire. We never anticipated the popularity and growth that we experienced as an online platform to that degree. I was teaching multiple yoga classes daily along with meditation classes. We projected it would last a month or two or until things returned to normal after the pandemic was over but it had a life of its own and kept going and is still going strong today. It’s been a lot of fun and of course a lot of commitment and hard work. My fiancé and business partner Nina nazar was the one who was able to pivot in March of 2020 and boldly execute the transition from studio to online quickly and successfully. She was the business genius able to make it all happen so seamlessly. We offer 4 weekly online flow classes, 1 weekly online restorative stretch class, 2 weekly online meditation classes, and 2 in person classes a week. It is very encouraging to see so many students showing up so regularly to their practice each week. It’s a great way to get healthy and stay healthy and doesn’t require a whole lot of time or money. It is ultimately a great lifestyle choice and once you get the momentum going its pretty easy to continue with it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There certainly have been challenges along the way. As for retreat business the very first retreat I ever promoted flopped. I put a $1000 non refundable deposit down for a retreat in Maui and I did not get one sign up, ouch. Well over 70 retreats later I can chuckle about it and chalk it up as tuition for learning. There were a couple other retreas thru the years I had to pull the plug on but that was a rarity. 99% were epic experiences. As for our online platform it was sink or swim and trail and error. We dove in not knowing what we were doing other than doing the best we could with what we knew and had. And we did great! A lot of faith and a lot of course corrections especially with electronics, zoom, cameras, lighting, camera angles, microphones malfunctioning, and on and on….. It was a real test of patience. That being said we lost maybe 2 or 3 online classes do to technical malfunctios over the last 5 years, with over 2000 plus classes in our recorded library. Something we have had to learn is not everything is in our control. The famous learning curve. . I could go into greater detail with many more struggles but will spare you.
We’ve been impressed with Global Tribe Yoga, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are an online yoga studio and wellness retreat business. We teach weekly online classes in Flow Yoga, Restorative yoga, and Meditation. We also curate 4 yoga/wellness retreats each year to various places domestically and internationally. What sets me apart from other teachers and leaders in this industry is that I tend to make things more fun and lighter with humor and joy. I know it’s possible to have great intensity and playfulness simultaneously. We also curate and promote a strong sense of authentic community. Many strong and lasting friendships and romantic relationships have formed from our classes and retreats. We offer both an adventurous and safe environment to grow, explore, and discover more of yourself and others with lots of opportunity for laughter thrown in there. Life being already hard enough and certainly serious enough, we kindly offer a time out from all that.
How do you think about luck?
I truly believe good luck to be the close brother and sister of commitment,
consistency, and collaboration. What we input and output comes back to us. And yes there is that thing we call grace or good luck that flows in usually unexpectedly to help make things even more fantastic. Some things truly are beyond our control for the so called good or bad. That’s where we have needed to learn the art of surrender. I have been very lucky and I am equally very focused and hard working.
