Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Yoon
Hi Steve, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
This business was started by mom back in 1978. I purchased the store approximately 2013. Since then, I have managed to turn the store into the local store. People I have see grown up in the neighborhood since they were babies come by because we have become more than a customer/business owner relationship, we have become friends. We have become a staple to Venice and all locals know where we are and who we are.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most difficult struggle for me taking over the store is the theft. In the beginning theft was a daily occurrence. After the community came to know me and who I was, the stealing has stopped by the local gangs. They have come to know me and respect me. If a “non” local comes and tries to steal something and the locals see it, they are the ones that stop the theft from happening.
We’ve been impressed with Trading Post Liquor Mart Inc, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a typical liquor store. You have your beer, spirits and wine. We try to cater to the locals. I give the locals a deal on their purchases because since we are by the beach and we are a tourist community, there are no tourist during the winter times and the locals keeps us afloat during those times. They tell me or my co-workers what they are looking for and we try our best to get it for them. We cater to them and their needs,
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
During COVID when the bars and the restaurants were closed, we were the goto spot. We got to meet new neighbors and made new friends. COVID has taught me that the government cannot control the people. The government has tried to shut everything that everyone enjoyed doing but the people came up with new creative ideas to get together with friends and enjoy the outdoor activities that they would never have known in their mundane everyday routing.
